The 1.0 release pushed the Abyssal Whip into late-game territory, and the weapon you now pull from an Abyssal Demon is its rougher cousin, the Abysmal Whip. It is a Power Level 4 vestige with slash damage, a bleed effect, and a name that is easy to misread. Getting one comes down to a single fight in the swamps, plus enough bronze gear to survive it.
Quick answer: Kill an Abyssal Demon in the Whispering Swamp, Bloodblight Swamp, or Fractured Plains. It always drops Abyssal Remains, which unlocks the Abysmal Whip recipe at a blacksmith’s bench.
The 1.0 rework: Abysmal Whip vs Abyssal Whip
Two whips now exist, and the spelling is the only quick way to tell them apart. The Abysmal Whip is the early-to-mid reward you make from an Abyssal Demon. The Abyssal Whip is the Power Level 7 Masterwork version, sitting much later in progression. Both released with the 1.0 update on 15 September 2026, and any Abyssal Whip you owned before 1.0 was converted into an Abysmal Whip.
| Item | Power Level | Special effect |
|---|---|---|
| Abysmal Whip | 4 | Attacks build bleed; no special attack |
| Abyssal Whip (Masterwork) | 7 | Abyssal Snare, barbed bleed, unarmed block |
The Abysmal Whip still applies a buildup of bleed, but it lost the original special attack that the old whip carried. Abyssal Demons also began dropping Tier 4 upgrade shards alongside the recipe, so the fight stays worthwhile even after you have the whip.

The Abyssal Demon is a Power Level 4 mini-boss that wanders three regions. It is aggressive, so it will come to you once it sees you. It also has a long respawn timer, which makes a clean kill worth planning around.
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Power Level | 4 |
| Health | 1500 |
| Weakness | Slash |
| Resistance | Air |
| Respawn | 7 days |
| Locations | Whispering Swamp, Bloodblight Swamp, Fractured Plains |
There is also a rare chance for one to appear in the north-eastern Fractured Plains, but you should not rely on that spot. Open the world map, pick a swamp lodestone, and fast travel to the edge of the Whispering Swamp to start the hunt.

Gear and supplies to bring
A full Tier 3 bronze set is the practical baseline for this fight. Crafting it needs bronze bars and hard leather at the armour bench, and hard leather is made in the tannery by combining ordinary leather with adhesive. Adhesive comes from swamp tar loaded into the kiln at a 1:1 ratio.

Fabric gear needs a Loom placed inside a sheltered base. The Loom itself costs 20 Ash Planks, 4 Bronze Bars, and 8 Wool Threads, and wool thread is spun from fleece at the spinning wheel. Once the Loom is up, you can weave wool thread into wool cloth for the armor pieces that call for it.

Round out your kit with a fire weapon enchantment, plenty of healing food such as Redberry Crunches, and a spare portable Lodestone for fast recovery.
Where to farm the raw materials
| Material | Where to farm |
|---|---|
| Swamp tar & clay | Ground pools across the Whispering Swamp |
| Copper & tin ore | North of the Fractured Ruins agility course is the Frost cave. |
| Fleece | Sheep and ram herds in the Stormtouched Highlands and Fractured Plains |
| Oak logs | Temple Woods (cast Splinter on a felled trunk) |
The frost cave is the densest copper and tin source, with ore clinging to ice ledges and more nodes along the cliff path leading up to it. It also hides a chest with extra plans and rune essence.

Chests to loot on the route
Ruins and caves along the way carry building plans, rune essence, swamp tar, and the occasional vestige. Goblin ruins north of Zanik hold chests with a Bandos amulet and a Cruel Goblin Blade vestige, which is handy if you are also running Goblin Diplomacy.

Underground Garou caverns are another reliable stop. Clearing a Garou Druid at its altar opens a pack chest stocked with swamp tar, feathers, and more plans.

How to defeat the Abyssal Demon
If you are using magic, keep casting downtime short so you always have room to sidestep the next teleport strike.
Abyssal Demon drops
The recipe drop, Abyssal Remains, is guaranteed. The Abyssal Spine you need to actually craft the whip is a lower-chance roll, so a single kill may not hand you both the recipe and a usable spine.
| Item | Quantity | Rarity |
|---|---|---|
| Abyssal Remains | 1 | Always |
| Abyssal Ashes | 3 | Always |
| Monstrous Fang | 3 | Always |
| Hard Leather | 5 | Always |
| Abyssal Spine | 1 | 45% |
| Ascension Shard (Power Level 4) | 12–19 | 40% |
Craft the Abysmal Whip
With the Abyssal Remains recipe learned, build the Abysmal Whip at a blacksmith’s bench. It grants 100 Artisan experience and needs a mix of demon and swamp materials.
| Material | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Abyssal Spine | 1 |
| Shrapnel | 3 |
| Swamp Thread | 3 |
| Adhesive | 3 |
| Vault Shard | 4 |
The finished whip is Power Level 4 slash damage with a base of 44 to 76, five attack combo, and 1300 durability. Its bleed builds over five rapid hits, and it repairs with a single Abyssal Spine. Because attacks knock most enemies back, they can be pushed out of your combo, so it works best against targets that stay put.
Upgrade path to the Power Level 7 Abyssal Whip
You can ascend the Abysmal Whip with ascension cores at a mystic forge, climbing through Power Levels 5 to 8 for higher damage. The alternative is turning it into the Masterwork Abyssal Whip, whose recipe waits in the Umbral Sands, near the Burning Spire. That version is Power Level 7, restoring the full special attack, the Abyssal Snare, and stronger effects, and it uses the Abysmal Whip itself as an ingredient.
The method to obtain the Masterwork recipe is currently bugged, and the Power Level 9 upgrade is unavailable for the same reason. If you ascend the Abysmal Whip to Power Level 8 and then upgrade it, the result is brought back down to Power Level 7.
You will know the process worked when Abyssal Remains appears in your inventory after the kill and the blacksmith’s bench lists the Abysmal Whip as craftable. Gather one Abyssal Spine plus the swamp and vault materials, and the whip is yours to build.
