The Myling is the ghost that punishes players who rely on their ears. It talks and interacts more than most entities, then goes almost silent the moment a hunt starts, so the first footstep you hear is often the one already in the room with you. The good news is that the trait is measurable, and you can prove it in a single hunt.
Quick answer: Look for EMF Level 5, Ultraviolet, and Ghost Writing, then keep a powered piece of electronic equipment on you during a hunt. If your flashlight starts flickering before you can hear footsteps or vocalizations, it is a Myling. If you hear the ghost while your gear is still stable, it is not.
Myling evidence in Phasmophobia
The Myling uses a three-piece evidence set. All three must be logged in the journal before the ghost type can be selected on standard difficulties.
| Evidence | How you collect it |
|---|---|
| EMF Level 5 | Keep an EMF Reader near the ghost room and wait for an interaction to push the reader to a full five bars. |
| Ultraviolet | Sweep doors, light switches, keyboards and windows with a UV light after interactions to find fingerprints. |
| Ghost Writing | Place a writing book in the ghost room and check back for a written page. |
Nothing about that combination is exotic on its own, which is why behavior matters. On higher difficulties where evidence is reduced, the audio test below can carry the identification by itself.

Add to Google Preferences →Why Myling hunts sound quieter
The journal describes the Myling as quieter when hunting, and that phrasing sends a lot of players down the wrong path. It is not a volume slider. It is a range cut.
A normal ghost’s footsteps and vocalizations reach you from about 20 meters during a hunt, fading gradually as it gets further away. A Myling’s hunt audio only carries about 12 meters. Near the edge of that range the sound is muffled, but it sharpens quickly as the ghost closes in. The effect covers vocalizations as well as footsteps, so humming and growling are hidden by the same shortened range.
| Audio cue | Standard ghost | Myling |
|---|---|---|
| Hunt footsteps and vocalizations | Audible up to ~20m | Audible up to ~12m |
| Electronic interference (flashlight flicker) | Starts at ~10m | Starts at ~10m |
| Paranormal sounds on Parabolic Microphone | Every 80–127 seconds | Every 64–127 seconds |
That narrow gap between the 12-meter audio range and the 10-meter interference range is the whole test. Every other ghost is loudly audible long before your gear reacts.
Trigger a hunt on your terms with a cursed possession
Waiting for sanity to drain wastes time and puts you in a bad position when the hunt finally lands. A cursed possession lets you start the hunt while you are already safe.

Flashlight flicker test to confirm a Myling
Electronic interference is your ruler. A flashlight, EMF Reader or any other powered device begins flickering when the ghost is roughly 10 meters away on the same floor, which is just inside the Myling’s audio range.
Tip: if you would rather not hold gear during a hunt, drop an active piece of equipment at your hiding spot before you trigger the possession and use its flicker as the trigger point instead. Speaking on Global Chat also keeps you detectable, so carry incense if you go that route.
Parabolic Microphone check for frequent paranormal sounds
The Myling’s listed weakness is that it makes paranormal sounds more often, and that is testable outside a hunt. Every ghost produces these sounds on a Parabolic Microphone or a Sound Recorder, but the Myling does it on a 64 to 127 second cycle instead of the usual 80 to 127 seconds.
The practical version is a stopwatch check. If you pick up two paranormal sounds less than 80 seconds apart, the ghost is a Myling. Anything longer proves nothing on its own, so treat a slow cycle as inconclusive rather than an exclusion.
What can break the footstep test
Two situations produce a false Myling reading, and both are easy to avoid once you know them.
- Different floors. Walls and floors muffle hunt audio on their own, so a ghost hunting above or below you will sound distant regardless of type. Only trust the test when the ghost is on your level.
- The Raiju. Its electronic interference reaches about 15 meters, so your flashlight flickers well before you hear anything, mimicking the Myling result. Rule it out with a separate check such as ghost speed near electronics.
Once you have confirmed the ghost, the same trait becomes a survival problem. On large maps and in long corridors a Myling can close a lot of ground before you hear anything, so watch for it visually and treat silence as neutral information rather than an all-clear. A Parabolic Microphone sidesteps the issue entirely, since it registers footsteps and vocalizations at range no matter which ghost is hunting you.
