Most modern internet browsers support various extensions and add-ons that further enhance their capabilities. These extensions allow you to do so much more when using the browsers, such as automatically saving passwords, blocking ads, or even checking your grammar. But most browsers only support the extensions on the desktop versions.
Microsoft Edge supports extensions not only on desktop devices but also on Android devices. This means you can use extensions even while surfing the web on your phone. Let us see how you can install extensions in the Edge browser on Android.
Enabling Extensions on Edge for Android
The regular version of the Edge browser currently does not support extensions on Android. So, you will need to download Edge Canary from the Play Store and install it on your device. Once you've installed the browser, you need to first enable the extensions before you can use them.
- Launch Edge Canary on your Android device and type
edge://flags
in the search bar. - Tap on the first option that appears in the search results, which will take you to the experimental features page.
- This page lists several experimental features that are not yet available in the regular version of the Edge browser. Scroll down until you find the 'Extensions On Edge' option, or use the 'search flags' field to search for it.
- It will be disabled by default. Tap on the drop-down menu where it says 'Disabled' and then on the 'Enabled' option to turn it on.
- You will need to restart the browser to start using extensions. Tap on the 'Restart' button at the bottom to do so.
- After restarting the browser, you will see that extensions have been enabled.
- Now, tap on the hamburger menu in the bottom right of the browser and you will see several options.
- However, you will need to access additional options to get to the extensions option. Swipe left to do so.
- On the next page, you will find the 'All Menu' option. Tap on it to open up the complete menu.
- Swipe to the bottom where the 'Extensions' option is located.
- Tap and hold the 'Extensions' option, and you will see a '+' sign next to it. This means you can move the option around.
- While pressing down on the option, drag it to the top of the menu so you can use extensions in the browser more easily.
Downloading and Installing Extensions
To start using extensions on Edge in Android, you will need to download and install them.
- Tap the hamburger icon at the bottom again to access the 'Extensions' option.
- When you tap on that option, it will show you the available extensions you can install.
- To install an extension, simply tap on the 'Get' button next to it.
- A pop-up will appear asking whether you want to add the extension to the browser. Tap on the 'Add' button to do so.
Now, your extension is installed and active. You can find all your extensions in the same menu by tapping the hamburger menu and then going to the 'Extensions' option.
That's all. With the Canary version of the Microsoft Edge browser, you can now install extensions even on Android. While the Canary version is for testing features, and there is no news on when extensions will be available in the standard Edge browser on Android, it is only a matter of time before it makes its way over to it since it is a highly requested feature.
