Microsoft Teams typically updates itself automatically, ensuring users have the latest features and security enhancements. However, there may be times when you want to manually check for updates to make sure you're running the most recent version.
Step 1: Launch the Microsoft Teams desktop application on your computer. Click on your profile icon located at the top-right corner of the window. From the dropdown menu, select Check for updates.
Teams will begin checking for any available updates. If your application is already up to date, a message will appear at the top of the window stating, "You have Microsoft Teams Version X.XX.XX.XXXX (64-bit). It was last updated on [Date]."
Step 2: If an update is available, Teams will start downloading it in the background. You won't see a progress bar or notification during this process. It's recommended to continue using Teams as usual and give it a few minutes to complete the download, depending on your internet speed.
Step 3: After allowing sufficient time for the update to download, you'll need to restart Teams to install the update. First, close the Teams window by clicking the X in the top-right corner.
Step 4: To ensure Teams is completely closed (and not just minimized to the system tray), locate the Teams icon in your taskbar or system tray. This is usually found at the bottom-right corner of your screen. If you see the Teams icon here, it means the app is still running in the background.
Right-click on the Teams icon and choose Quit to exit the application completely.
Step 5: Reopen Microsoft Teams by clicking its shortcut on your desktop or searching for it in your Start menu. Upon restarting, Teams will install the downloaded update, and you'll be running the latest version.
Step 6: To confirm that you're now using the newest version of Teams, click on your profile icon again. Select About and then click on Version. The application will display the current version number and the date it was last updated in a banner at the top of the window.
By regularly updating Microsoft Teams, you ensure that you have access to the latest features and improvements. While the app usually takes care of updates automatically, manually checking can give you peace of mind that you're up to date.
