One of iOS 12’s lesser known feature is support for contactless student ID cards in Wallet to let students access places like the library, dorm, campus events, or pay for food and laundry in campus using their iPhone or Apple Watch.

Requirements for adding student ID card in Wallet

  • iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus and later
  • Apple Watch
  • Apple ID signed into iCloud
  • The latest version of the eAccounts app
  • Duo Mobile app
  • The latest version of iOS and watchOS

Supported Universities

The following three educational institutions currently support contactless student ID cards in Apple Wallet:

  • Duke University
  • University of Alabama
  • University of Oklahoma 

Johns Hopkins, Santa Clara, and Temple Universities will add support by the end of this school year.


How to add student ID card in Wallet

Here’s a quick to add your student ID card in Wallet on your iPhone running iOS 12 or later.

  1. Install eAccounts and Duo Mobile app

    Sign in into the eAccounts app with your school ID and password, and set it up.

  2. Add student ID in wallet

    Tap the user profile icon in the top left of eAccounts app » tap Add to Apple Wallet and select your iPhone.

  3. Add student ID to a second device

    If you want to add student ID to a second device but you’re not seeing the Add to Apple Wallet button, tap the circular i icon and select “Add or Remove Campus ID from Wallet”.


How to use student ID card from iPhone or Apple Watch

The student ID card on your iPhone and Apple Watch can be used wherever your university accepts the physical student ID card. You can have access to the library or dorm, ride the campus bus, buy food at campus cafés, and pay for books and supplies at campus stores by holding the top of your iPhone or the display of your Apple Watch within a few centimeters of the middle of the card reader until you feel a vibration.

Express Mode

When you add your student ID card to the Wallet, the Express Mode is turned on by default. You don’t need to validate the use of your ID card with Face ID, Touch ID, or Passcode when Express Mode is turned on.

If you’d like to disable Express Mode on your student ID card though, open the Wallet » select your ID card, tap the three-dot menu » and tap the Express Mode toggle On/Off.


How to Add Money to student ID Card

You can add money to your student ID card with a credit or debit card you’ve set up in the eAccounts app, or via your school’s self-service machines.


How to check your student ID card account balance

You can check your account balance from the Wallet app on your iPhone.

  1. Open the Wallet app.
  2. Select your student ID card.
  3. You’ll see three account balances on the card. Tap the three-dot menu to see more balances.

How to remove student ID card from Wallet on your iPhone or Apple Watch

You can remove your student ID card from your iPhone or your Apple Watch.

Remove ID card from iPhone

  1. Open the Wallet app.
  2. Select your student ID card.
  3. Tap the three-dot menu to see full details. Then tap Remove Card at the bottom.

Remove ID Card from Apple Watch

  1. Open Wallet app on your Watch.
  2. Tap and hold your student ID card.
  3. When remove icon appears, tap Remove Card.

You can also remove ID card on your Apple Watch using the Watch app on your iPhone. Go to Wallet & Apple Pay » select your student ID card and tap Remove Card.
