The fastest reliable income in Industrialist comes from turning cheap raw ore into a finished product and shipping it out through a truck depot. A steel rod line does exactly that. It takes iron, coal, and wood, refines them through grinders and blast furnaces, and rolls the result into steel rods that sell in bulk. Once the pipes and power are connected, it runs on its own.
Quick answer: Unlock the Craft Assembler (4,000RP) and Steel (15,000RP), then build a line of Iron Drills → Grinders → Blast Furnaces (iron) feeding a Steel Blast Furnace, fuel it with coke made from Coal Drills plus a tree farm, and pipe the steel ingots into Rollers that empty into a Huge Truck Depot.

Research and materials you need first
Two technologies gate this build. Open the Research menu and confirm both are unlocked before you start placing machines, otherwise the steel recipe and the assembler will not be available.
| Technology | Cost | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Craft Assembler | 4,000RP | Needed for later crafted goods like Crankshafts and Gearboxes |
| Steel | 15,000RP | Enables the Blast Furnace steel recipe this farm relies on |
You will also want a clear, flat plot of land. The layout below runs in long parallel rows, so give yourself room to place a 36-drill line and a 19-roller line side by side.

Build the steel rod factory
The whole chain flows in one direction. Iron is drilled, ground into dust, smelted into iron mix, then combined with coke to make steel, which is rolled into rods and exported. Coke is a separate mini-loop that feeds fuel into the furnaces.

How to confirm the farm is earning
You know it works when steel rods reach the Huge Truck Depot and your balance ticks upward as trucks collect them. If money is not moving, trace the chain backward. The most common stall points are a pipe flowing the wrong way, a furnace missing coke fuel, or a machine with no power showing on its HMVT connection.
Note: Pollution lowers your payout. The less Pollution you generate, the more Money each sale returns, so keep an eye on it as you scale the line up.

Iron Coil: the strongest mid-game money method
If you want a proven number to build toward, Iron Coil production is regarded as the best mid-game earner. It needs about 54.02kMF/sec of power and follows a fixed machine ratio you can multiply to scale.
| Machine | Count (base ratio 15:5:1:10:8) |
|---|---|
| Iron Drills | 15 |
| Electric Furnaces | 5 |
| Ingot Molder | 1 |
| Sawmills | 10 |
| Rollers | 8 |
Run at this ratio, the farm makes roughly $175.4/sec, about $631k/hr, at 7.27% Pollution/hr. A Huge Truck Depot is strongly recommended for the export. Keep the same 15:5:1:10:8 proportions when you multiply the machines and the throughput scales cleanly.
Tip: Use the Sawmill instead of the Press wherever the recipe allows. The Sawmill produces a one-to-four ratio against the Press’s one-to-one, which is a large output gain for the same input.

Where to reinvest: Crankshafts, Gearboxes, and Bottles
Your steel rods are also the entry point to higher-value crafted goods. Once the rod line is stable, feed it into these recipes to multiply the value of each sale through the Craft Assembler.
| Product | Recipe | Sell value |
|---|---|---|
| Crankshaft | 2x Steel Rods + 4x Gears | $758 |
| Gearbox | 1x Crankshaft + 2x Plastic Casing | $2,552 |
| Bottle | 2 made per cycle | $72.5 each |
Gearboxes are the standout step up and stay effective right until you reach Gold-tier production. The limiting factor is Crankshaft supply, not plastic, since a single Plastic Molding Machine can feed two Craft Assemblers, and even a modest plastic setup can support 20 to 30 assemblers making Gearboxes nonstop.
Bottles are a useful side earner from spare Ingot Molders. A bottle sells for $72.5 versus $145 for a plastic casing, but you get two bottles per cycle, so the base income matches. The advantage is that you can fill bottles with liquids to raise their value, and water or filtered water is the option that consistently pays off.

Cheaper early-game fallbacks
If you cannot yet afford the full steel line, start smaller. Coal is the first material in the game and costs only $5.2, and a short line of Coal Drills feeding a Truck Depot brings in your first funds. Move on quickly, since Copper becomes the better option once you have a little capital.
Copper is the first material worth processing. You can sell Raw Copper directly for $5.51, which is simple and lucrative because you just place drills and ship the ore. Processing it into Copper Wire raises the payoff further: one wire sells for $7.31, and one unit of Raw Copper yields six units of Copper Wire, so processed copper earns far more per ore. The wire line runs Copper Drill → Electric Furnace → Ingot Molder → Press → Roller at a 9:3:1:2:2 ratio for regular drills.
Whichever tier you are at, the pattern that pays best stays the same. Refine raw material into a finished good, automate the pipes and power, keep Pollution low, and let a Huge Truck Depot handle the selling while you scale the ratios up.
