Leland in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: How Life Saver Works

A breakdown of Leland's stats, his Life Saver cooldown and upgrades, and the perks that suit a Strength build.

A breakdown of Leland’s stats, his Life Saver cooldown and upgrades, and the perks that suit a Strength build.

Leland McKinney is the muscle of the Victim roster in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and the way his kit is built leaves very little room for interpretation. He hits the hardest, he moves the loudest, and he folds faster than almost anyone else once the Family gets hands on him. Playing him well means using his one big button at the right moment and staying near people who can cover for the rest.

Quick answer: Life Saver knocks down and stuns any Family member you barge into — except Leatherface — and sits on a 180-second cooldown that ability upgrades can shorten to 126 seconds.

Leland’s attributes and movement speeds

Every attribute is scored out of 50, and Leland’s spread is lopsided on purpose. Strength is his ceiling, Stealth is his floor, and Toughness sits low enough that a single bad encounter can end a match.

StatValue
Strength40 / 50
Endurance30 / 50
Proficiency25 / 50
Toughness20 / 50
Stealth10 / 50
Walk speed150
Run speed245
Sprint speed312

Strength at 40 is what makes him useful. It shortens the physical jobs — battering through obstacles, damaging generators, holding his own in close encounters — and it makes his hits on Grandpa land harder. Stealth at 10 means the Family will hear him coming from a long way off, so quiet work like lock picking and tool hunting belongs to someone else on the team.

Life Saver: cooldown, stun, and the Leatherface exception

Life Saver is a barge. You activate it while running into a Family member, and they get knocked down and stunned. It works on yourself or on a teammate who is pinned, which is the entire point of the character — you trade your own safety for a few seconds of freedom for someone else.

Two limits matter. The base cooldown is 180 seconds, so you get very few uses per match. And it does not affect Leatherface at all. Charging the chainsaw expecting a knockdown is one of the fastest ways to lose Leland.

The prompt lives in the corner of the HUD alongside your weapon, so a quick glance tells you whether the barge is ready before you commit to a rescue.

UpgradeEffect
Quicker RechargeSets the cooldown to 162, 144, or 126 seconds
Increased Stun DurationBarged Family members stay stunned for 10, 11, or 12 seconds
Restore StaminaRestores 30 or 60 stamina after a barge
Concussive HitApplies a concussion effect to the knocked-down Family member

Tip: the stamina restore and the shorter cooldown pair well together. A barge that refills 60 stamina turns a rescue into an escape instead of a trade.

What Leland should be doing in the basement

Start by collecting bone scraps. They are Leland’s second offensive tool, and with high Strength his sneak attacks and close encounters buy longer windows than they would for anyone else. Save at least one scrap for a moment when a teammate is caught rather than spending them all on the first Family member you see.

While quieter Victims work the locks, position yourself between them and the nearest approach. When the basement door opens you will see a clear on-screen confirmation that it is unlocked, which is your cue to move rather than wait.

Aim to be among the first Victims to reach the surface. Life Saver is worth far more at a chokepoint where the Family is stacking up than it is deep in a corridor where only you benefit.

Exterior objectives: valves, generators, and Grandpa

Above ground, Leland is a battering ram with a job list. Valve handles found around the exterior get carried to the tank or the barn, attached, and then held to turn the pressure valve on — the prompt tells you exactly which button to hold once you are standing at it.

Generators are the other place his Strength pays off, since he damages them faster than the rest of the group. If the team is committing to a road or rear exit, that is a job worth taking off someone else’s hands.

Attacking Grandpa is the third priority. High Strength keeps him down longer, which delays the scream the Family uses to track everyone. Then it becomes a stamina problem — you need enough left in the tank to actually get away from whoever comes to investigate.

Best perks for a Leland Strength build

Build around the two things Leland does reliably: winning close encounters and hitting Grandpa. Then patch the Endurance and Toughness gaps so an aggressive play does not immediately become a death.

PerkWhy it fits
AgitatorIncapacitating Grandpa cuts the Family’s bond by 1.5–2.5 levels, weakening their tracking
Choose FightSneak attacks and close encounters stun Family members 2–5 seconds longer
Tae Kwon DoorSlamming doors on the Family holds them in place longer during a chase
EmpoweredRestores 50–90% of max stamina after surviving a close encounter
Fight And FlightAdds 10% movement speed and cuts stamina use after a close encounter
Been Workin’ OutRaises Strength by 3–7, feeding every other physical interaction
GrapplerMakes each button tap in a close encounter 10–30% more effective

Empowered and Fight And Flight are the pair that turn a survived grapple into distance. Without them, Leland tends to win the struggle and then get caught fifteen steps later with no stamina left.

The mistakes that get Leland killed

Most Leland deaths trace back to the same handful of causes, and all of them come from treating 40 Strength as though it were 40 Toughness.

  • Barging Leatherface. Life Saver has no effect on him, so the attempt only closes the distance for the chainsaw.
  • Scouting alone. Stealth 10 means the Family hears him early; a solo Leland is usually a tracked Leland.
  • Taking lock picking jobs. Low Proficiency and loud movement make him the wrong person for slow, quiet interactions.
  • Committing to an objective with no stamina. Turning a valve or damaging a generator locks you in place for several seconds.
  • Dropping into a well while cornered. The jump escapes one chaser, but you land in a tunnel and can be tracked down before you can climb out.

Looping through wall gaps in tight interior spaces like Fuel Storage is another trap. The sightlines are short, the corridors dead-end, and Leland’s low Toughness means one connected chainsaw hit is often enough.

Tight interior rooms like Fuel Storage leave almost no room to break a chase.

Leland works when the rest of the team treats him as a shield rather than a scout. Let the quiet Victims handle locks and tools, stay close enough to reach them when a grapple starts, and spend Life Saver on the moment that actually opens an exit. Get that timing right and he is the reason three other people make it out — even in the matches where he does not.
