The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: Every Victim Escape Route Explained

How victims break out of the basement and open the battery, generator, and pressure valve exits on all three maps.

How victims break out of the basement and open the battery, generator, and pressure valve exits on all three maps.

Every victim run in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre follows the same shape. You start locked in a basement, you break out with tools, and then you work one exit until it opens. The maps change the details, but the exits themselves come down to a small set of objects: a battery, a generator, and a pressure valve.

Quick answer: Get out of the basement first, then commit to one gate. Disable the battery at the Gas Station, switch the generator off before the fence and main road gates at the Mill and Slaughterhouse, or fit a valve handle and turn the pressure valve on to open the pressure gate.

Leave the basement before you plan anything else

Victims begin in fixed basement spots. Julie starts in the West Cell at the Gas Station, Virginia in the Sewer Corridor at the Mill, Wyatt suspended in the Cold Room at the Slaughterhouse, Sonny in the Mill’s basement tunnels, Ana in the Slaughterhouse workshop, and Leland in the Slaughterhouse West Cell. None of the outdoor objectives matter until you are above ground.

Search the immediate room for tools and bone scrap. Tools cover door locks and traps, and bone scrap is the item you use to stab a Family member and buy yourself distance.
Pick the lock on the basement door. The lockpicking minigame asks you to hold the circular indicator in the right spot, and it can be cancelled if a Family member closes in.

Open the basement exit and step outdoors. If a teammate is nearby, unlocking doors together is faster, and it leaves two people covering the same route instead of one.

Every escape exit by map

Each map has more than one way out, but they are not interchangeable. Pick the one closest to where you surfaced, because crossing the whole map to reach a different gate is how most runs end.

Powering the exit: battery, generator, and pressure valve

The battery route at the Gas Station is the shortest of the three. Once the battery is disabled, the gate stops being an obstacle and becomes a straight run, which is why pairs of victims often leave through it together.

The generator is the quieter option. Switching it off at the Slaughterhouse courtyard or in the Mill’s warehouse area clears the way to the main road gate and the fence gate, and it can be done while the Family is busy hunting someone else.

The pressure valve is the loudest and the most demanding. You need a valve handle, which is picked up outdoors alongside fuses, and then you have to install it and turn the valve on. That noise pulls the Family straight to you, so the valve works best when someone is prepared to hold the area rather than run from it.

Leland is the clearest example of that role. He can open the valve, then use his barge to knock Hands or Sissy off their feet and follow up with bone scrap, keeping the gate area clear long enough for a second victim to slip through the opened pressure gate with him.

Surviving the ground between the basement and the gate

Stamina management decides most of these runs. Sprinting the whole way leaves you standing still and breathing hard exactly when Leatherface arrives, so tall grass, crouched movement, and short bursts between cover are safer than one long dash.

Sheds and storage buildings are the reliable answer when you are already hurt and the screen has gone red at the edges. Looping through a shed breaks line of sight, and it gives you a moment to reposition instead of running in a straight line toward whoever is chasing you.

Two hazards deserve their own plan. Family poison clouds will drain you while you stand in them, and Grandpa reveals your position from where he sits. A bone scrap stab immobilizes Grandpa for a while, and it is worth spending one if his calls keep landing on your route.

How to tell the escape actually counted

Passing the gate is not the confirmation. The escape only registers once you are through and the escape notification appears on screen, which is also what tells a teammate following behind you that the route is open and still usable.

Why escapes fail at the gate

  • Getting boxed in at a fence line with no second route, which is how Virginia’s Mill attempt ended in an execution.
  • Being the last victim alive. Once the others are dead, the whole Family converges on one exit and cornering you takes seconds.
  • Triggering a trap you never disabled, which stops you long enough for someone to close the gap.
  • Starting a loud objective, such as the pressure valve, without the health or bone scrap to defend it.

Note: XP gain now runs at double permanently, so a clean escape is worth more toward progression than it used to be. That does not change any of the routes above, but it does make finishing a run, rather than dying deep in someone else’s objective, the more efficient way to play.
