The Holoken in LumenTale: Memories of Trey goes well beyond catching Animon. By channeling an Animon's elemental type through the device, Trey gains the ability to interact with environmental puzzles throughout Talea. Each elemental type provides its own distinct set of field abilities, and the game unlocks these powers gradually as the story progresses through new regions.
Quick answer: Open the Holoken's Animon mode, select any Animon carrying the elemental type a puzzle requires, then throw the device at the target object to trigger its effect.

How Holoken Powers work
Catching an Animon sends it to the Anispace and converts its Bilia into an Animon Link. That link does two things at once — it lets Trey call the creature back into battle, and it feeds the Holoken the creature's elemental type. Loading that type in Animon mode is what makes the Holoken capable of affecting the matching puzzle objects in the environment.
What matters is the Animon's type, not the specific species. Any creature carrying the Geo type will enable the Geo power, any Aura-type Animon enables the Aura power, and so on across all 13 elemental types in the game. Once an Animon is selected in Animon mode, a gem-like symbol appears beneath its portrait to confirm the infusion, and the Holoken's path of travel takes on the color of the loaded type before it is thrown.
If an object in the field shows a question mark above it, it requires a Holoken Power that Trey has not yet unlocked. Most powers become available through standard story progress as new regions open up. A small number are only unlocked after defeating specific Animon bosses a second time, which is only possible after completing both the Mythos and Logos storylines.

How to infuse an Animon type with the Holoken

Step 1: Open the Holoken's Animon mode. This brings up a selection screen listing each Animon you have linked through Bilias.
Step 2: Select the Animon whose elemental type matches the puzzle object you want to affect. A gem-like symbol will appear beneath the creature's portrait to confirm the power is loaded, and the Holoken's trajectory will shift to the corresponding type color.
Step 3: Aim at the target object and throw the Holoken. The elemental effect fires on contact — a Geo-type throw breaks boulders, an Electric-type throw toggles electrical devices, a Water-type throw striking a plant creates a bubble to ride, and so on for each type.
If the Holoken connects with an object but nothing happens, the loaded type most likely does not match what the puzzle requires. Reopen Animon mode, confirm the element shown beneath the selected creature's portrait, and switch to a different Animon if necessary.
The Demon power operates differently from every other type. Its effect triggers only when the Holoken returns to Trey without hitting any object at all — throwing it into empty space and letting it come back cleanly is the activation condition, not striking a target. It is also the last power most players will unlock, since Morsiver at Sivius Peak only becomes available for a rematch once both the Mythos and Logos storylines are complete.
