Marathon Vault Breaker Explained: Dates, Vault Data, and How the PvE Mode Works

Bungie’s PvE-only roguelite runs inside Cryo Archive from July 21 to August 4, 2026, with mode-specific gear and currency.

Vault Breaker is Marathon’s first PvE-only mode, and it drops the extraction game’s usual rival squads entirely. Instead of fighting other players, you push through progressively harder Vaults inside the Cryo Archive map, take down waves of AI-controlled UESC forces, and carry out a single mode currency called Vault Data.

Quick answer: Vault Breaker runs from July 21 to August 4, 2026, arrives with Update 1.1.5, and is playable Solo, Duo, or Trio at any Runner Level. You use a free Sponsored Kit instead of your own loadout, and only event currency and designated event rewards leave the mode with you.

Vault Breaker dates and access requirements

The mode is a limited-time event tied to the Mid-Season 2 update. It goes live on July 21, 2026 and closes on August 4, 2026. There is no Runner Level gate, so any account can queue, and you can play alone, in a duo, or in a three-person crew through matchmaking or as a premade group.

Bungie confirmed the full rundown in its Marathon Mid-Season 2 Update preview, and the studio’s own account laid out the setup as well.

How a Vault Breaker run works

Each run sends you into the Cryo Archive to break open locked data vaults. Opening them relies on symbol-matching and puzzle-solving rather than raw firepower alone, and the deeper you go, the harder the encounters become. Enemy resistance scales up the further you push, so later layers demand tighter coordination in a group.

Every threat is AI-controlled. You face standard UESC troops, heavier security forces, and bosses, and the studio also drops UESC Commanders into runs. At the end of a run you hit a climactic fight against the Compiler, an entity that controls the deck’s defenses and is built to test team play.

As in the core game, you choose between extracting early with what you have and pressing deeper for better rewards. If the clock runs out before you reach an extraction point, you lose the loot you were carrying. That risk is the whole tension of the mode.

Vault Data: the two tiers and how to earn them

Vault Data is the event currency and the main thing you keep. It comes in two tiers that are earned in different ways, and one source pays out even when a run fails.

CurrencyHow you earn it
Tier 1 DataSolving Vaults (you must exfil to keep it), or killing a UESC Commander (credited after the run whether or not you exfil).
Tier 2 DataSolving consecutive Vaults in a single run and then successfully exfilling. This is the only source.

The Commander kill is the one route that lets you leave a bad run with something, since that Tier 1 payout survives a failed extraction. Tier 2 is the skill test. Chaining vaults flawlessly and then extracting is where solo players tend to hit a real limit.

The Sponsored Kit and what carries over

You do not bring your normal loadout into Vault Breaker. The mode hands you a free Sponsored Kit from the Vault Breaker Armory tab in the Events section, and it starts deliberately weak with one standard weapon and a small amount of equipment. You then spend Vault Data to build it up, and those upgrades persist across runs.

Kit spending covers weapon quality, survivability such as better shields, and implant and core slots for later runs. Cradle and Faction upgrades are also enabled inside the mode. The Armory rotates a deluxe weapon daily, stocks Cryo Key templates, and offers Prestige Weapons with one of each available per event.

Here is the important limit. The weapons and gear you find during a run do not exfil with you. Only event currency and designated event rewards leave the mode. You can spend Vault Data in the event shop on cosmetic emblems, weapon styles, and equipment that is usable outside the event in Marathon’s regular PvPvE mode, but nothing you loot mid-run transfers to your main inventory. Bungie built it this way to stop low-risk farming from destabilizing the wider economy.

Note: Weekly stock limits apply in the Armory. Tier 1 items cap at three or five per week depending on the item, Tier 2 items cap at one per week (or you can convert Tier 2 to Tier 1 and buy five), and Prestige Weapons are limited to one of each per event.

Codex challenges and why it’s a test run

Four Codex challenges run alongside the event and reward cosmetics, giving you a reason to keep engaging beyond the currency grind. Everything here is framed as experimental for a reason.

Vault Breaker is a direct precursor to Marathon’s full PvE offering, which is planned for Season 3 on September 22, 2026. Bungie is using the two-week window to stress-test its PvE infrastructure and gather feedback on how the AI encounters and the Compiler hold up without human opponents in the mix. If you want to try the roguelite loop before the permanent version lands, the mode leaves Marathon on August 4, 2026, so the window is short.
