Minecraft: How to Get Gunpowder (All Methods)

Gunpowder can't be crafted, so here are the mob drops, loot chests, and trades that actually stock it.

Gunpowder can’t be crafted, so here are the mob drops, loot chests, and trades that actually stock it.

Gunpowder is the one resource that quietly gates a lot of late-game Minecraft, from TNT and fireworks to any splash potion you want to throw. It has no crafting recipe, which means you can only pull it from hostile mobs, generated loot chests, or a single wandering trader deal. The good news is that at least one of those routes works no matter how you play.

Quick answer: Kill Creepers for the fastest, most reliable gunpowder (0–2 per kill, up to 5 with Looting III). If hostile mobs don’t spawn in your world, buy 4 gunpowder from a Wandering Trader for 1 emerald.

Farm mobs for the most gunpowder

Three mobs drop gunpowder, and each one fits a different stage of the game. Creepers are the workhorse, Ghasts cover you while you’re in the Nether, and Witches drop the biggest stacks but far less often. The Looting enchantment on your sword raises the maximum roll for all three.

MobDefault dropWith Looting IIIWhere it spawns
Creeper0–2up to 5Dark areas, caves, surface at night
Ghast0–2up to 5The Nether, over large lava lakes
Witch0–6up to 15Swamp huts, raids

Creepers

Creepers are the practical choice. They spawn in the dark almost everywhere, and a single kill gives you a two-in-three chance of at least one gunpowder. The catch is timing. If a Creeper explodes, it drops nothing, so you have to kill it first. Hit it with a bow from range, or close in with a strong sword and back off before the fuse ends.

Ghasts

Ghasts drop gunpowder at the same rate as Creepers, but they float above the lava lakes of the Nether and shoot exploding fireballs. Bring a bow, or deflect their fireballs straight back at them to score the kill. They’re worth farming only if you’re already spending time in the Nether.

Witches

A Witch can drop up to 6 gunpowder, or up to 15 with Looting III, which sounds unbeatable. The problem is consistency. Gunpowder is only one of several possible Witch drops, so most kills give you none at all. Witches appear in swamp huts and throw harmful potions, so keep moving during the fight. Treat them as a bonus source rather than your main supply.

Tip: For a steady supply, build a Creeper farm. A dark spawning platform funnels Creepers into a drop or lava trap, then hoppers collect the gunpowder into a chest while you wait at an AFK spot. Ghast and Witch farms work too, though a Creeper farm is the simplest to run.

Find gunpowder in loot chests

If you’d rather explore than fight, several generated structures stash gunpowder in their chests. Desert Pyramids also hide a single piece inside suspicious sand you can brush out. These are the locations and how much you can pull from each.

Note: Inside a Desert Pyramid, avoid the pressure plate in the center of the treasure room. Stepping on it sets off hidden TNT and destroys the loot below, gunpowder included.

Buy gunpowder in Peaceful mode

Hostile mobs don’t spawn on Peaceful difficulty, which rules out Creepers, Ghasts, and Witches entirely. That’s where the Wandering Trader comes in. This traveling villager can offer 4 gunpowder for a single emerald, making it the only renewable option when nothing wants to attack you.

The trade isn’t guaranteed. A Wandering Trader’s stock is randomly selected, so the gunpowder deal only appears roughly one time in eight when one spawns. Check every trader that wanders past your base, and stock up whenever the offer is there.

What gunpowder is used for

Every gunpowder use ties back to explosions, fireworks, or throwable potions. Once your chest is full, these are the things you can put it toward.

  • TNT: Combine gunpowder with sand or red sand for controlled explosions when mining, clearing terrain, or building traps.
  • Firework Rockets: Mix gunpowder with paper. Three gunpowder is the maximum, and adding more increases flight duration, which matters for Elytra travel.
  • Firework Stars: Combine gunpowder with a dye and extra ingredients to set the color and visual effect of a rocket.
  • Fire Charges: Gunpowder with Blaze Powder plus Coal or Charcoal makes three Fire Charges for igniting blocks.
  • Splash Potions: Add gunpowder to a regular potion on a brewing stand to convert it into a splash potion you throw instead of drink.

To craft a firework rocket, place gunpowder and paper together in the crafting grid. The output slot shows three rockets at once.

For TNT, arrange gunpowder and sand in the crafting grid, and the finished TNT block appears in the output slot.

Whichever route you take, hunting Creepers stays the fastest way to fill a chest, while the Wandering Trader keeps Peaceful worlds supplied. Line up a Looting III sword or a small Creeper farm, and gunpowder stops being the bottleneck for your next TNT haul, firework show, or brewing run.
