A Potion of Fire Resistance grants the Fire Resistance effect, which makes you immune to every kind of fire damage. With it active, you can stand in open flames, walk across magma blocks, shrug off blaze fireballs, ignore the Fire Aspect enchantment, and swim through lava without losing health. It is the single most reliable item for surviving the Nether and recovering gear from lava pools.
Ingredients needed to brew a Potion of Fire Resistance
You need a Brewing Stand, Blaze Powder for fuel, and three core items. The base brew turns a Water Bottle into an Awkward Potion, then into the finished potion.
| Item | Purpose | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Brewing Stand | Brews all potions | Craft with 1 Blaze Rod and 3 cobblestone, or take one from a village |
| Blaze Powder | Fuels the stand | Crafted from a Blaze Rod (dropped by Blazes in Nether fortresses) |
| Water Bottle | Holds the potion | Fill a glass bottle at any water source |
| Nether Wart | Makes the Awkward Potion base | Found in Nether fortresses, bastion remnants, and soul sand valleys |
| Magma Cream | Adds the Fire Resistance effect | Dropped by Magma Cubes, or crafted from 1 slimeball + 1 Blaze Powder |
How to brew a Potion of Fire Resistance (3:00)
Once you have your ingredients and a fueled Brewing Stand, the brew takes only a few seconds per stage.
Step 1: Open the Brewing Stand and place Blaze Powder in the left fuel slot. It powers up automatically and lasts for several brewing sessions.
Step 2: Put up to three Water Bottles in the three bottom slots, then drop one Nether Wart into the top slot. When it finishes, the bottles become Awkward Potions.
Step 3: Place one Magma Cream in the top slot above the Awkward Potions and let it brew. The bottles turn into Potions of Fire Resistance, each lasting 3:00.

You know it worked when the bottle name reads "Potion of Fire Resistance" and hovering over it shows Fire Resistance (03:00). If you only get Mundane Potions, you skipped the Nether Wart step or added Magma Cream to a plain Water Bottle instead of an Awkward Potion.
Extend the Potion of Fire Resistance to 8:00
Three minutes is enough to escape an accidental fire, but it is short for lava crossings or planned fights. Adding Redstone Dust raises the duration to 8:00.
Step 1: Make sure Blaze Powder is still fueling the stand, then place your finished Potions of Fire Resistance in the bottom slots.
Step 2: Add one Redstone Dust to the top slot and wait for the brew to finish. Hover over the bottle to confirm the new duration shows Fire Resistance (08:00).
Splash and Lingering versions
Convert a regular or extended potion into a thrown variant to protect pets, villagers, or teammates. The conversion happens in the same Brewing Stand.
| Variant | Add to a Fire Resistance Potion | Effect duration |
|---|---|---|
| Splash Potion of Fire Resistance | Gunpowder | 3:00 (8:00 if extended) |
| Lingering Potion of Fire Resistance | Dragon's Breath (added to a Splash potion) | 0:45 (2:00 if extended) |
Step 1: Place the Potions of Fire Resistance in the three bottom slots and confirm Blaze Powder is in the fuel slot.
Step 2: Add Gunpowder to the top slot to make Splash potions. To go further, take a Splash potion and brew it with Dragon's Breath to produce a Lingering potion.

A Lingering Potion of Fire Resistance can also be crafted with arrows to make Arrows of Fire Resistance.
Effect, duration, and what it protects against
Fire Resistance is a common, renewable, non-stackable potion. The drinkable and Splash versions share the same durations, while the Lingering version is much shorter because it leaves a cloud.
| Potion type | Regular duration | Extended duration |
|---|---|---|
| Potion | 3:00 | 8:00 |
| Splash Potion | 3:00 | 8:00 |
| Lingering Potion | 0:45 | 2:00 |
While the effect is active you take no damage from fire, soul fire, magma blocks, fire charges, fireballs, and lava. As a small bonus, it slightly improves how clearly you can see while submerged in lava. Note that your body can still catch fire visually. If the flames are not put out before the effect ends, you will start taking damage again. The effect also does not stop TNT explosions or other non-fire damage.
Best uses for a Potion of Fire Resistance
The clearest payoff is lava survival. Instead of dying instantly when you fall into a lava pool, you can swim out, which is invaluable for recovering items after an accidental death.

Drink one before exploring bastion remnants, where narrow bridges over lava punish a single misstep, so you can focus on fighting piglins. Inside Nether fortresses, the effect cancels blaze fireball damage and makes those fights far easier. It is also the standard choice before mining Ancient Debris with TNT in the Nether, and it can save a pet that falls into lava if you throw a Splash version at it.

Other ways to get a Potion of Fire Resistance
Brewing is the most consistent method, but the potion also appears as loot in a few places.
| Source | Chance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Witch drop | 8.5% | Only if the witch dies while drinking the potion |
| Piglin bartering | ~1.71% each | Trade a gold ingot for the regular or Splash version |
| Swamp hut cauldron | 5% | Bedrock Edition only |
The brewing recipe is identical across Java and Bedrock editions, so once you have a stand, Magma Cream, Nether Wart, and Blaze Powder, you can keep a steady supply ready for every trip into the fire.
