Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Early Access Starts October 16 (Here’s How to Get In)

Digital preorders on PS5, Xbox, and Steam unlock the full single-player story a week before the October 23 launch.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is bringing back a perk that disappeared after Modern Warfare 3. If you preorder a digital copy, you can finish the entire single-player campaign before the rest of the game even goes live. The catch is that only the story mode opens early, while multiplayer and DMZ stay locked until launch day.

Quick answer: Preorder or pre-purchase any digital edition (Standard or Vault) of Modern Warfare 4, then launch the game on Friday, October 16 (PT) to play the full campaign. The full game, including multiplayer and DMZ, unlocks for everyone on October 23, 2026.

When Modern Warfare 4 campaign early access starts

Campaign early access begins on Friday, October 16 (PT). That is a full week ahead of the worldwide launch on October 23, 2026. Activision confirmed the early access window after it had been rumored for weeks.

This is the first Call of Duty to offer campaign early access since 2023’s Modern Warfare 3. The 2022 entry, Modern Warfare 2, started the trend, but both Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 skipped it.

How to get Modern Warfare 4 campaign early access

Preorder or pre-purchase a digital edition of Modern Warfare 4 before October 16. The early access applies to the Standard Edition and the Vault Edition, so the cheaper option still qualifies.
Make sure your purchase is digital, not a boxed copy. Physical editions do not include campaign early access, so a disc or cartridge will only open up at the standard October 23 launch.
Preload the game ahead of time if your platform allows it, then open Modern Warfare 4 on October 16 (PT). The campaign will be selectable while the other modes remain locked.

Note: A digital preorder also registers you automatically for the Open Beta, with no separate code required. Buyers of physical editions receive a beta code from their retailer instead.

What you can play during early access week

During the early access period, only the campaign is available. Multiplayer and the returning DMZ mode stay offline until the October 23 launch, when every mode opens for all players. That makes the week a dedicated window for the story before the wider community jumps into matchmaking.

The campaign centers on a full-scale North Korean invasion of the South. You mostly play as Private Park, a young, inexperienced South Korean soldier, while a rogue Captain Price runs his own off-book mission. Missions move across the Korean Peninsula, New York, Paris, and Mumbai. For the first time in years, the campaign can also be played completely offline on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Platforms and editions that qualify

Platform / editionCampaign early access (Oct 16)
Digital Standard or Vault, PS5Yes
Digital Standard or Vault, Xbox Series X|SYes
Digital Standard or Vault, Steam / Battle.net (PC)Yes
Digital Standard or Vault, Nintendo Switch 2Yes (preorders open later in the year)
Physical / boxed editionsNo, plays from Oct 23
Game PassNo, not included at launch

Preorders are already live for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with Switch 2 preorders coming later this year. One important caveat: Modern Warfare 4 is not part of Game Pass this year, so a subscription will not grant the campaign or the early access window.

You’ll know it worked when Modern Warfare 4 boots on October 16 and the campaign is the only mode you can launch. If the campaign stays greyed out, the most common reasons are a physical copy instead of a digital one, a Game Pass install rather than a purchase, or a preorder that hasn’t fully downloaded yet. With a clear week before everyone else dives into multiplayer, there’s plenty of room to wrap up the story without falling behind on launch day.
