Modern Warfare 4 Survivors Walkthrough: What Happens in the North Korea Mission

A crashed infiltration, a freezing stealth escape, and a defector hand over the mission’s key targets before it rolls into Stranded.

Survivors is the ninth mission of the Modern Warfare 4 campaign, and it opens with a plan that falls apart almost immediately. A Tier-1 team is supposed to drop into North Korea and destroy an artillery base, but the transport taking them in gets shot out of the sky. Everything after that is a wounded squad trying to stay hidden in freezing terrain until it can regroup and figure out what to hit next.

Quick answer: Survivors is a mostly cinematic, stealth-driven mission where a crashed infiltration team evades patrols, carries a wounded soldier to shelter, and meets a North Korean defector who reveals three targets before the game transitions into mission 10, Stranded.

The briefing: a HALO drop near Rajin

The mission begins on a tactical briefing screen set in the present day, under the heading “NK Occupation.” Captain Kwon Hae-soo, callsign “Kal,” lays out the plan. The team will insert into North Korea by HALO drop to take out an artillery base located roughly 10 clicks north of the DMZ, near Rajin. Strike Team Sierra 1 is backed by a Quick Reaction Force of Marines led by Lieutenant West.

The squad you fly in with is small. Alongside Kal and Lieutenant West, there is Private Park Hyun-jun, Private Jae, Private Cho, and Specialist Dunn. You play as Park, a South Korean soldier in winter combat fatigues and helmet, and the briefing scene lets the team trade a few lines before things go wrong.

The crash that strands the team

As the aircraft, callsign “Eagle-3,” enters North Korean airspace, anti-aircraft fire tears through the hull. Cargo in the cabin catches fire, and the plane goes down. This is the moment the mission’s title card, “Survivors,” earns its name, because the drop never happens the way it was planned.

The survivors crawl out of the wreckage and straight into freezing river water. Lieutenant West comes out of it severely injured, and comms are completely dead, so there is no way to call for an immediate extraction. From here the mission shifts from a planned strike to pure survival in hostile territory.

Stealth down the river

Most of the playable section is quiet movement. The squad wades downriver toward distant red beacon lights, and the game leans on stealth rather than shooting. When enemy trucks roll past with searchlights sweeping the terrain, the soldiers drop prone into the snowy riverbank and wait for them to clear.

A search helicopter adds a second layer of pressure. Its spotlight sweeps overhead and forces the group to freeze against rock cover until it moves on. These evasions are marked by “Checkpoint Reached” text in the top-left of the screen, which is the game confirming you cleared each hazard without being spotted.

Carrying Private Cho

Private Cho collapses from the cold and his wounds, and the mission hands Park the job of getting him to safety. A “Pick Up Chow” prompt appears, and from there Park carries Cho through the snow while the game offers short dialogue choices to keep him talking and conscious. The lines on offer include “We’re almost there” and “Rescue is coming,” both small story beats rather than gameplay-altering decisions.

The sequence ends when Specialist Dunn finds a basement entrance inside an abandoned house. The squad moves below for cover, which is where the stealth escape finally gives way to a tense indoor standoff.

Ko Jin-Hyuk and the three targets

From an open basement window, the team watches a North Korean soldier wave his comrades away from the building. That soldier, Ko Jin-Hyuk, then walks into the basement himself and explains that he wants to defect and is willing to help. Dunn, Jae, and Park nearly open fire before Kal orders weapons lowered to hear him out.

Ko backs up his offer with hard information. He pulls out a tactical tablet, or TacMap, and marks three locations that shape the rest of this part of the campaign.

Kal decides not to hold Ko. He unties him and sends him back out with a captured radio, tasking him with retrieving medical supplies and steering enemy search parties away from the house so the squad is not discovered. Letting the defector walk is framed as the safer play, since keeping him would raise suspicion when his unit notices he is missing.

Where Survivors ends and Stranded begins

Survivors closes with the squad preparing defenses in the basement. The “Stranded” title card appears as Kal orders Park to take an overwatch position upstairs, which marks the handoff into mission 10. Stranded continues directly from this setup, and its reported trophies point toward a SAM site assault and supply crates, lining up with the targets Ko just revealed.

In the mission sequence, Assassins comes before Survivors, and Stranded follows it. Survivors is solo-only, like the rest of the Modern Warfare 4 campaign; co-op is unavailable. Campaign early access began October 16, 2026, ahead of the full launch on October 23, 2026. More details about objectives and difficulty behavior should emerge as players complete the mission.
