Modification Station Location in Subnautica 2

Modification Station Location in Subnautica 2

The Modification Station in Subnautica 2 is an interior crafting facility you scan and unlock at the Research Outpost. It handles Tadpole upgrade modules and Alterra tool modifications, and it only works once placed inside a Seabase built with the Habitat Builder.

📍
Quick answer: Head to the Research Outpost at roughly -208879, 425138 (around 140m depth). A Modification Station sits inside the facility — scan it with your scanner to unlock the blueprint.

Where to find the Modification Station blueprint

The cleanest unlock path is the Research Outpost itself. The station is already built and powered inside the outpost, so you can scan the intact unit in a single trip rather than chasing three separate fragments.

If the outpost scan is interrupted or you want backups, there are additional fragment spawns spread across nearby wrecks and ruined platforms. Only one fragment is required to complete the blueprint.

CoordinatesDepthLocation notes

-203435, 447645205mAmong ruined platforms on a cliff south of the Research Outpost
-161112, 45968795mInside the EVA Prep wreck

The shallowest option is the EVA Prep wreck fragment at 95m, which is reachable early without depth upgrades. The 330m platform north of Stairway to Heaven is the deepest spawn and generally not worth the trip unless you are already in the area.

How to unlock and build it

Step 1: Travel to the Research Outpost at -208879, 425138. The outpost sits at around 140m, so a basic oxygen loadout is enough to reach it safely.

Step 2: Enter the outpost and locate the Modification Station mounted on an interior wall. Aim your scanner at it and hold the scan input until the blueprint registers in your PDA.

Step 3: Return to your Seabase and equip the Habitat Builder. Select the Modification Station from the interior facilities menu and place it on a flat interior wall.

Step 4: Confirm placement to consume the materials. Once built, the station draws 5 energy per second while idle and active, so make sure your base has stable power.

Note: a secondary recipe listing shows the cost as 2 Titanium, 2 Celestine, and 2 of a third component on the wiki. Bring an extra unit of each input to cover variance between patches.

What the Modification Station crafts

Once placed, the station opens two upgrade categories. Tadpole upgrades cover performance and depth modules for the small vehicle, while prototype tool modifications add new functions to handheld Alterra gear.

CategoryItems
Tadpole Upgrade ModulesCavitation Muffler, Engine Efficiency, Photovoltaic Charger, Strike Armor, Tadpole Depth Module Mk. 1, Tadpole Depth Module Mk. 2 (Creative Mode only)
Prototype Tool ModificationsBioscanner, Feedback Resonator

The Tadpole Depth Module Mk. 1 is the most common reason players seek the station early, since it extends the Tadpole's safe diving depth and opens access to deeper biomes. The Feedback Resonator is also gated behind this station, which matters if you are tracking prototype tool unlocks.

Verifying the unlock worked

After scanning, the PDA logs the Modification Station under buildable interior facilities. Open the Habitat Builder menu inside a Seabase; if the station appears as a placeable option and not as a fragment progress bar, the blueprint is fully unlocked.

If the entry still shows partial scan progress, you scanned a fragment instead of the intact unit. Pick up any additional fragments from the table above to complete it, or return to the Research Outpost and rescan the working station.
