The Voltaic Crown is the lightning Infusion Tarstone in Mortal Shell 2, and it is locked behind a single boss rather than a hidden chest. Slot it in, spend Resolve, and your strikes carry Lightning damage until the charges run out — or forever, once you have fed it enough upgrades.

Quick answer: Travel to the Nochtean Gate beacon in Prisoner’s Domain, cleanse it to start the fight, and kill Vrago, Solikar Champion. The Voltaic Crown drops on the spot.

What the Voltaic Crown does

It is an Infusion-type Tarstone. Activating it drains 30 Resolve and coats your weapon in Lightning for a set number of strikes. You can run two Infusion stones at once, so the Voltaic Crown pairs with a second element without conflict.

LevelEffect
1Consume 30 Resolve to infuse your weapon with Lightning
2Infusion lasts for 4 strikes
3Infusion lasts for 8 strikes
4Infusion is permanent

Note: the level numbering shifts by one depending on where you read it, because the base activation is sometimes counted as level 1 and sometimes as the stone’s inherent effect. The order never changes — 4 strikes, then 8 strikes, then permanent.

Which weapons and sidearms accept it

The Voltaic Crown does not fit everything. Five pieces of gear list it as compatible, split between melee weapons and sidearms.

TypeGear
WeaponsAxatana, Clockwork Scythe, Great Martyr’s Blade
SidearmsSalvaged Trebuchaxe, Triarch Repeater

If you are specifically after Lightning on a sidearm’s shots and you do not have compatible gear, the Voltaic Amber is the cheaper alternative at 20 Resolve. It drops from the Starved Harridan at the Vestige of Infinity and only fits the Salvaged Trebuchaxe and Triarch Repeater.

Voltaic Crown location: Nochtean Gate beacon in Prisoner’s Domain

The stone sits behind a beacon trial rather than in the open world, so there is nothing to search for once you reach the right spot. The whole encounter takes place around the Abandoned Shrine in Prisoner’s Domain.

Make your way to the Nochtean Gate beacon. Open your map before committing to the run so you can confirm the beacon marker is the Nochtean Gate and not one of the nearby Nochte-area beacons.

Interact with the beacon and cleanse it. Cleansing immediately opens the trial and puts you on the path toward the boss, so top up healing and Resolve first.
Push through the Abandoned Shrine. The route is a short corridor of minor enemies, and none of them are required kills — you can run past most of them straight to the arena.

Defeat Vrago, Solikar Champion. The Voltaic Crown is the fight’s reward and lands in your inventory as soon as the boss goes down.

How to confirm you have it

Open the Tarstones menu and look under the Infusions category. The Voltaic Crown appears there with its Resolve cost listed. Equip it to a compatible weapon or sidearm, then trigger the infusion in combat — your strikes should visibly crackle with Lightning, and your Resolve meter should drop by 30.

If nothing happens when you try to activate it, the usual reasons are simple. You are below 30 Resolve, you have it slotted into gear that does not accept it, or you already have two other Infusion stones occupying the slots.

Upgrading to a permanent Lightning infusion

Upgrades happen at the Tarforge in Marrow Keep, but the higher tiers stay locked until Franz has the Etching Needle. Without it, the Voltaic Crown stays stuck at its base charge count and never reaches the permanent state.

Grab the Etching Needles before the Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods fight. Once you spot Ruk past the bridge, drop through the opening and turn right just before the tunnel to reach a small side area holding a bone chest.
Hand the Etching Needle to Franz in Marrow Keep. That expands what the Tarforge is willing to work on.
Keep the Voltaic Crown equipped and kill enemies with it. Tarstones gain experience only while they are slotted, so swapping it out pauses progress toward the next level.
Return to Franz once the stone’s XP bar is full and pay the Coin cost to push it to the next level. Repeat until the description reads that the infusion is permanent, at which point the Resolve cost stops mattering.

The Voltaic Crown is not missable and does not sit behind a timed window, so you can come back for it after the final boss during free roam if you skipped the Nochtean Gate trial on your first pass. The only thing worth planning around is the Etching Needle pickup, since that gate sits earlier in the run than the stone itself.
