Mortal Shell 2 launches worldwide on August 20, 2026, but you do not have to wait until then to start playing. The Devout Edition grants up to 72 hours of early access, which means the full game becomes playable on August 17. A free open beta is also live right now, giving you another way to jump into the opening hours before release.
Quick answer: Buy the digital Devout Edition ($59.99) to unlock early access starting August 17 at 1:00 PM UTC. The Standard and physical Revered editions do not include early access and only unlock on August 20.
Early access begins: August 17, 2026 at 1:00 PM UTC
Buy the Devout Edition to unlock early access
Early access is tied to a single edition. The digital Devout Edition costs $59.99 in the US, with regional pricing varying by storefront, and it is the only version that lets you play before the standard launch. Alongside the full game, it includes up to 72 hours of advanced access and the Obsidian skin set for all eight playable Shells, plus the standard pre-order bonus.

Note: If the game still shows as locked, confirm you own the Devout Edition and not the Standard or Revered version. Neither of those includes the 72-hour head start.

Which editions include early access
Three editions exist, and only one of them shortens your wait. The physical Revered Edition is aimed at collectors and unlocks on August 20 alongside the standard release, so it does not provide the three-day head start.
| Edition | Price / format | Early access | Key contents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $49.99 digital | No (August 20) | Full game, Skeletal and Obsidian Harbinger skins |
| Devout | $59.99 digital | Yes, from August 17 | Full game, pre-order bonus, Obsidian skin set for all eight Shells |
| Revered | Physical (PS5) | No (August 20) | Physical game, Obsidian and Skeletal Harbinger skins, 100+ page artbook, SteelBook, three fine art prints, in-game cosmetics, collector’s box |

If your only goal is starting before August 20, the Devout Edition is the sole option. The Standard Edition suits players who are fine waiting for launch, and the Revered Edition is built for collectors who want physical extras rather than a time advantage.
Play the opening hours now through the free open beta
The open beta is a free way to try Mortal Shell 2 ahead of both the early access window and the full launch. It is available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and it does not require a pre-order or paid subscription.
The beta covers roughly the first three hours, starting with the Prologue and continuing into an early section of the open world. You play as the Harbinger, cleanse beacons, explore optional dungeons, take on hidden mini-bosses, and eventually face Magdelena, the Lady of the Woods. You can also discover Tiel, the Acolyte, one of the eight playable Shells in the full game.
Two rewards carry into the full release. Playing for 30 minutes permanently unlocks the Flayed Harbinger cosmetic, claimable in the full game at launch. Progressing beyond Marrow Keep unlocks the option to skip the Prologue when you start the full version.
Most beta progress does not transfer. Currency, weapons, Shells, collectibles, and other items found during the beta reset at launch, so the Flayed Harbinger skin and the Prologue-skip option are the exceptions to expect.
To play as early as possible, download the free open beta today, then buy the Devout Edition to keep going from August 17 without waiting for the August 20 global launch. Standard and Revered buyers will unlock at the same time as everyone else on release day.
