Mortal Shell 2: How to Reset a Shell and Get All Glimpse Back

Mother's Severance costs 5,000 coins at Merrick and lets Zhirelle refund every Glimpse you sank into a shell.

Mother’s Severance costs 5,000 coins at Merrick and lets Zhirelle refund every Glimpse you sank into a shell.

Glimpse is the currency that upgrades shells in Mortal Shell 2, and it is finite. Pour 27 of them into Proxima, decide halfway through Fainweald that you would rather be swinging as someone else, and that investment is stuck — unless you buy the one item built to undo it. Mother’s Severance breaks the bond between a shell and its bearer, and hands every Glimpse back.

Quick answer: Buy Mother’s Severance from Merrick for 5,000 coins under his Rare Findings tab, take it to Zhirelle, the Shell Keeper, and pick Shell Severance. Confirming the prompt refunds every Glimpse spent on your bonded shell immediately.

Mother’s Severance: Cost, seller and effect

The item’s description is blunt about what it is — “a fragile, blade-like bone” that, in skilled hands, can break the bond between shell and bearer. It does nothing on its own. It is a key you hand to an NPC.

Because Merrick restocks it, this is not a one-shot decision. You can respec more than once across a playthrough, provided you can keep finding 5,000 coins.

Buy Mother’s Severance from Merrick

Head to Merrick’s spot in the hub and walk up until the “SPEAK WITH MERRICK” prompt appears. He is the only vendor who carries the item.

If you are short of 5,000 coins, sell off what you are not using. Junk-tier valuables like the Devout’s Chalice and Marsh Pearl convert straight into coin, and clearing them out is usually faster than farming.

Open the Rare Findings tab in Merrick’s shop and buy Mother’s Severance for 5,000 coins. It will not appear in his standard stock, so check that tab specifically.

Check your inventory before you travel. The item’s tooltip should read “Bring to Zhirelle, the Shell Keeper to sever your bond with a shell,” which confirms the purchase went through.

Sever the bond at Zhirelle and reclaim your Glimpse

Make your way back through the temple area of Marrow Keep to Zhirelle. She is the same NPC who handles shell bonding and shell abilities, seated where you normally spend Glimpse.

Talk to her and choose Shell Severance from the menu. The option sits alongside Shell Bonding and Shell Abilities, and only shows its use once you are carrying Mother’s Severance.
Confirm the prompt. It names the shell you are currently bonded to — “SEVER YOUR BOND WITH PROXIMA?”, for example — so read it before hitting yes.
Collect the refund. Every Glimpse you sank into that shell comes straight back to your total the moment the bond breaks, with no partial return or tax.

Move the refunded Glimpse into a new shell

Go to a Beacon and open Change Shell and Equipment. Swapping shells happens here, not at Zhirelle, which is the step people usually miss.
Equip whichever shell you want to build next, then head back to Zhirelle and spend the returned Glimpse on its upgrades. The refunded pool behaves like any other Glimpse you have picked up.

Note: Glimpse itself cannot be farmed. It sits near cleansed Beacons, inside Corrupted Gates and in hidden pockets of the overworld, and it does not respawn once collected — which is exactly why a full refund matters more here than a respec would in most soulslikes. Beyond a New Game Plus run, Mother’s Severance is the only way to get a badly spent stack back.

Why the reset does not work

There are only a few reasons this stalls. You are not carrying Mother’s Severance, in which case Zhirelle has nothing to work with. You went looking for the item in Merrick’s normal inventory instead of Rare Findings. Or you tried to reset a shell you are not currently wearing — the confirmation prompt targets the bonded shell, so swap at a Beacon first, then return to her.

If Merrick’s Rare Findings tab is empty, his stock has not come back around yet. It replenishes as you push through the campaign and take down main bosses, so keep progressing and check again the next time you pass through.

At 5,000 coins a pop, severance is not something to do casually, but it does turn shell choice into an experiment rather than a commitment. Try Eredrim for a few hours, decide the shoulder bash is not for you, and the Glimpse follows you to whatever comes next.
