Mortal Shell 2: Illusionist’s Cache Dungeon Location

A cliff teleporter south of the Citadel of Penance drops you at the Desolate Peak entrance.

A cliff teleporter south of the Citadel of Penance drops you at the Desolate Peak entrance.

Illusionist’s Cache does not open from the Citadel of Penance itself. That fortress is only the jump-off point. The dungeon sits on Desolate Peak in Fainweald, after a short hop from a cliffside teleporter.

Quick answer: From the southern bridge at the Citadel of Penance, step into the stone teleporter on the cliff to reach Desolate Peak, then take the cave stairs into the blue portal.

Illusionist’s Cache location in Fainweald

Open the map around Gloomshade Grove and the Citadel of Penance. Those labels sit close together, and neither one is the dungeon. Illusionist’s Cache is a Desolate Peak interior, reached from the citadel’s southern tip rather than from the grove roads.

Desolate Peak is a Fainweald sub-location. Once you are on that peak, the door is in the structure there, not back at the citadel walls.

Citadel of Penance southern bridge route

The reliable start is the southern bridge of the Citadel of Penance. Zoom the map to that southern tip before you move, so the cliff edge is easy to read.

Travel to the southern bridge area of the Citadel of Penance. Stay on the south edge of that zone instead of pushing into the main halls. The teleporter sits past the bridge, not on the central approach.
Walk under the stone archway near the bridge. Keep moving toward the cliff rather than turning back into the citadel. The pad is on the drop-off just beyond that arch.
Step onto the stone teleporter on the cliff edge and activate it. The pad sends you off the citadel entirely. You are not walking the rest of the way on foot.
Wait for the arrival at Desolate Peak. The location name appears as you come in on the grass. If that nameplate is on screen, the hop worked.

A Bone Gate north of the Outskirts of Nochte Beacon also lands you on Desolate Peak. Use that only if you are already in that part of Fainweald. The citadel teleporter is the cleaner line from Gloomshade Grove and the Citadel of Penance.

Desolate Peak dungeon entrance

On Desolate Peak, the door is in the building. Baghead sits on a throne with followers around him, and the entrance is directly opposite that spot. Face away from the throne and you are pointed at the right structure.

Run down the stone staircase into the dark cave entrance. The stairs drop out of the peak building into that cave. Stay on the steps until you are inside.
Walk into the blue swirling portal in the cave. That portal is the dungeon door. The map inside will not show a normal floor plan.

A Crypt Key sits on the shelf above the entrance, on the back counter of that same building. Take it while you are still on the peak. It is part of the entrance room, not a drop from inside the dungeon.

Confirm the Illusionist’s Cache location

Open the map after the portal. The area name switches to Illusionist’s Cache, marked as a dungeon, and the map reads MAP UNAVAILABLE FOR THIS AREA. That label is the check that you are inside. Leave through the same portal to return to Desolate Peak.

If you are still standing at the citadel, the teleporter was not used. If Desolate Peak is on screen but the map has not changed, you have not taken the cave portal yet. The chest deeper in holds the Shuddering Stone Tarstone, which is how you know you opened the right cache.

Once the map names Illusionist’s Cache, you can treat the location as found and leave the same way you came in.
