New Beginnings is the first proper mission of Chapter 1 in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, sending Bruce Wayne and Jim Gordon to the Gotham docks in pursuit of Detective Flass. Five Surfboards are scattered across the route, and a single Red Brick called the Nautical Modifier sits tucked away near the level's final encounter.
Surfboard locations in New Beginnings
The Surfboards appear in the order you progress through the docks, so a single playthrough with attentive looting is enough to clear them. Each one is a destructible prop, so a basic attack breaks it and adds to the counter. If you miss any, the mission is replayable from the Batcave computer at any time.

Red Brick: Nautical Modifier
The Red Brick is in the same area as Surfboard #5, the courtyard where you need to build a stud-pile object to reach Detective Flass. Before constructing anything, look at the small standalone building on the left side of the arena.
Step 1: Use Batman's grapple to pull yourself up onto the rooftop of that small building.
Step 2: Drop in through the open skylight (vent) on the roof to enter the hidden room.
Step 3: Pick up the Red Brick inside. An on-screen prompt confirms "Nautical Modifier Unlocked," and the brick can be toggled on later through the Batcave's Red Brick menu.
Mission context and character swap reminder
New Beginnings is the second mission overall and the first entry in Chapter 1, following the Prologue's Infiltration level (which has its own Bonsai Tree collectibles). Surfboard #1 specifically requires swapping to Jim Gordon to break a piece of machinery blocking the path during the Flass chase, so don't skip that ability prompt.
The full collectible payout for New Beginnings is 5 Surfboards and 1 Red Brick. Unlike later Chapter 1 missions such as Carmine Falcone or The Red Hood Gang, there are no WayneTech Caches to find here, which keeps the run-through short for completionists chasing 100 percent.
