Nodusfall Explained: HoYoverse’s Co-Op Boss Hunts Without Gacha

Confirmed details on Nodusfall's four-player fights, mythic bosses, PC requirements, and its no-gacha character model.

Confirmed details on Nodusfall’s four-player fights, mythic bosses, PC requirements, and its no-gacha character model.

Nodusfall is miHoYo’s first attempt at a grounded, co-op boss-hunting action game, and it looks almost nothing like the anime-styled titles the studio built its business on. Announced live at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, 2026, it puts four players against creatures pulled from mythologies around the world, in a fractured continent where divine authority has collapsed.

Quick answer: Nodusfall is a free-to-play, four-player co-op action game from miHoYo built in Unreal Engine 5. Characters are unlocked through play rather than random draws, pre-registration is already open on the official site, and no release date or platform list has been confirmed.

Nodusfall basics: developer, engine, and genre

The game is developed by miHoYo and published locally in China under the same name, with HoYoverse handling global publishing. It is the studio’s second Unreal Engine 5 project after Varsapura, and the shift in scope has been acknowledged internally. miHoYo CEO Liu Wei described the project as very “un-miHoYo” after the Gamescom presentation, pointing to the difficulty of building a large-scale, realistic fantasy multiplayer title at a studio that spent a decade making anime-styled gacha games.

The setting: Weavers, the Dreadnodus, and mixed mythologies

You play as a Weaver, one of a group of divinely created beings sent to change the fate of a world where order has broken down. The threat driving the story is the Dreadnodi, entities that spread corruption and twist legendary beasts into hostile monsters. Weavers hunt those corrupted creatures, chase the source of the corruption, and gather what remains of the world’s divine power to stabilize it.

The mythological mix is deliberate and wide. The reveal trailer, titled “Wield Divinity, Sever the Dreadnodus,” cuts between a sun-boat figure in the style of Ra, gold-hoarding dragons, a flaming bird perched on a giant tree hung with ten suns, and cloaked Weavers gliding along threads of light. Regions are described as distinct ecologically and culturally, spanning Eastern folklore beasts through to Western dragons.

Combat: weapons, damage types, and the co-op UI

Fights are structured as four-player PvE missions against a single large target, with squads expected to coordinate rather than stack buffs by swapping characters. The HUD tracks active skills bound to E, Q, R, G, and T, alongside guard and parry icons, skill cooldowns, a blade meter, and an ultimate gauge. Damage is split into types including Thunder, Cold, and Force.

Weapon variety in preview footage covers a sword-and-shield tank that times blocks to stagger enemies, a greatsword with slow, weighted ground slams that release electrical bursts, a bow that fires charged shots and can interrupt a diving monster mid-air, and a giant spear used by an enemy rider. Some characters also transform, including a winged celestial mode assembled from small birds that enables aerial attacks and dark projectile barrages.

Team play is built into specific prompts rather than left to chance. Downed players can be revived mid-fight, and a light-based power pulls a Weaver toward a target, brings an ally back up, or turns a Weaver into a towering warrior made of light. A “Waiting to Join Execution” prompt lets party members commit to a shared finisher, which summons a huge glowing spectral figure wielding an axe or halberd. One sequence has players work together to wrench a spear away from a dragon rider and drive it into the dragon.

Progression comes from the fights themselves. Beating enemies yields resources that unlock new weapons and abilities, and characters can be tuned with different combat styles and skill combinations.

Bosses and creatures shown so far

Two encounters have been shown at length. The Maldrake starts as an airborne dragon fight before the Maldrake Knight dismounts and continues on the ground with spear combos, grab attacks, and fire breath. That second phase includes an interactive blade clash with the on-screen prompt “Press repeatedly to overpower the enemy.”

The other is Qiongqi, the winged tiger of Chinese myth, fought by a full four-player party. Its dives can be interrupted by a light arrow, players use coffin-like defensive parries, and the encounter ends with a spectral halberd execution.

Mounts, the player hub, and characters

Outside of fights, players ride mounts along mountain trails and through open zones, and mounts also work inside boss arenas for repositioning across large spaces. The social hub is a large cavern filled with NPCs and other players, containing crafting facilities and a hot spring bathing area.

Named characters appearing in preview footage include Gramher, Suixi, and Qiong, alongside the Weaver framing. Weavers can also form bonds with powerful companions during the journey.

Monetization: free-to-play, no character gacha

Nodusfall is free-to-play, but the character acquisition model breaks from miHoYo’s usual approach. Characters are not pulled from random draws; they are earned through continued play. The studio has said it is considering a model built on cosmetic monetization, with optional items such as outfits, hairstyles, and accessories.

Note: the cosmetic-only framing is described as the intended direction rather than a finalized system, so the full monetization design has not been locked down publicly.

A PC spec sheet was shown alongside the gameplay reveal. Platform support beyond PC has not been announced.

Release date and pre-registration

No release date, launch window, or beta schedule has been confirmed. Pre-registration opened alongside the announcement on August 25, 2026, and is handled through the official Nodusfall site.

Treat any specific launch date circulating elsewhere as unconfirmed until it comes from miHoYo, HoYoverse, or an official Nodusfall channel. The trademark application filed in the United States in April 2026 covers downloadable game software and mobile applications and remains pending, which is legal groundwork rather than a platform commitment.

What is solid right now is the shape of the game itself: four players, one enormous mythological target, weapons that reward timing and positioning over character swapping, and a progression loop that pays out in gear and abilities instead of pulls. Whether that holds up over dozens of hunts is the part nobody can verify until the game is playable.
