Contaminated Wheat is a polluted variant of regular Wheat in Once Human. It is inedible, but you can ferment it in a Brewing Barrel to make Acid. It never grows in clean terrain, so finding it starts with locating the right kind of zone on your map.

Quick answer: Open the map, find a polluted zone whose Current Deviant Influence shows the mutation plants icon, then search its grass for dark, spiky stalks with purple and red tips. Press F to harvest.

Where Contaminated Wheat spawns in Once Human

Contaminated Wheat spawns only inside polluted zones, which are the areas under Deviant Influence. On the world map these zones carry red hazard icons. Regions such as Chalk Peak, Red Sands, and Iron River all contain them.

Not every polluted zone is worth checking. Click a zone and look at its Current Deviant Influence panel. You want the mutation plants icon. A Wild Zone, for example, is described in-game as a region that triggers increased mutations in animals and plants, including crops, while suppressing long-range firepower. Mirror Zones can also carry Deviant Influence.

Once you arrive, you can tell you are inside a polluted area by sight. The air turns misty, visibility drops, and a distorted vignette appears around the edges of the screen.

Best Contaminated Wheat location: Northwest Chalk Peak

Most polluted zones can spawn contaminated crops, but the northwest corner of Chalk Peak is the most densely packed. A minute or two of running around there can turn up roughly 10 contaminated plants across Wheat, Berries, and Aloe.

This is a higher-tier area. The bears hit hard and carry a lot of health, so be ready to fight or to leave quickly. Ore nodes such as Sulfur Ore and Silver Ore also sit in the same fields if you want to mine while you search.

Drink a Malt Ale or Corn Ale before you go in to stop sanity loss from the pollution.

How to spot and harvest Contaminated Wheat

Travel into a polluted zone that has the mutation plants icon, such as a Wild Zone. Watch for the mist and screen distortion to confirm you are inside it.
Scan the grassy ground for a dark, thorny cluster of stalks. The tips are colored in purple, red, and deep blue-magenta tones, which makes them stand out from normal grass and from ordinary Wild Wheat.
Walk up to the plant until the prompt reads “Contaminated Wheat.” Press the interact key, which is F by default, to gather it.

You know the harvest worked when a pickup notice for Contaminated Wheat appears on screen. A single plant has given anywhere from one to three units. The plants are easy to miss in dark spots, so slow down in shaded parts of a field, or ride a motorcycle across open ground to cover more space between pickups.

Contaminated Wheat seeds and respawns

Seeds drop only rarely when you harvest wild Contaminated Wheat. One farming run returned 4 seeds in 40 harvests, so expect to clear a lot of plants before you can start growing your own.

If a field runs dry, go to a Teleportation Tower, open the World List, and switch to another world. The plants in the new world will be unharvested, so you can sweep the same area again.

Contaminated Wheat cannot be sold to vendors or traded, so harvesting it yourself is the only way to get it.

Once you have a stack, put it in a Brewing Barrel. Every 3 Contaminated Wheat turn into 1 Acid. Contaminated Wheat takes a separate slot from contaminated Berries and Aloe, so mixing the three crops lets one barrel make more Acid at the same time.
