Monkey D. Luffy has spent more than two decades stacking new Gears on top of his rubber body, and the Elbaf arc is pushing that system to its breaking point. After the descent of Nerona Imu, the King of the World, Luffy’s peak form has stopped being enough. Eiichiro Oda is now building toward something past Gear 5, a transformation many are calling Luffy’s final Gear.
Quick answer: Luffy’s “final Gear” has not been officially named or shown yet. It is the power-up beyond Gear 5 that Oda is setting up during Elbaf, after both Gear 5 and Luffy’s new Gomu Gomu no Majin form lost to Nerona Imu.
Gomu Gomu no Majin, Luffy’s new Genie form in Chapter 1188
The fight everyone was waiting for started in Chapter 1187 on July 5, 2026, when Sun God Nika and the Devil of the One Piece world faced off again for the first time in 800 years. A week later, Chapter 1188 gave Luffy a brand-new trick inside Gear 5. He turned himself into a massive genie and called it Gomu Gomu no Majin.
This form actually held up better than standard Gear 5. Luffy dodged several of Imu’s blows, including the Stigma attack that took out Loki, and he even managed to clash directly with the King of the World. It was short-lived, but it showed that Luffy keeps inventing new ways to fight, which is exactly the point of the Nika fruit, where his power is limited only by his imagination.
Then Imu shut it down. He turned his Black Flame of Omen into the Blade of the Void: Boufu and stabbed Luffy straight through the torso, telling him flatly that he is far too weak to be Joy Boy.
How Luffy’s Gears have grown since Enies Lobby

Gear 5 arrived after Luffy’s true Devil Fruit was revealed to be the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, a Mythical Zoan rather than the Gomu Gomu no Mi everyone assumed. With it, Luffy beat Kaido in Wano and held his own against the Elders and Admiral Kizaru on Egghead. Oda even had Luffy call it his peak. Against Imu, that peak stopped being enough.
Why Gear 5 fell short against Imu
Chapters 1188 and 1189 made the gap painfully clear. In 1188 Luffy fell after being cut with a void-type blade. In Chapter 1189 on July 26, 2026, he was stabbed again with the Blade of the Sea God: Fragarach, weakened further, and would have been decapitated by the Axe of Xingtian if Scopper Gaban had not stepped in.
The takeaway is simple. Luffy’s Haki is not yet strong enough to match the King of the World, his Devil Fruit control is still incomplete, and his stamina and imagination have not reached Joy Boy’s level. Losing here is deliberate. If Luffy could already beat Imu, the story would have nowhere left to go, and the Final War is meant to be the biggest fight in the series.
The two paths to Luffy’s final Gear
Oda has drawn two clear routes for Luffy to reach this next form, and they may end up being the same route.
A maxed-out Devil Fruit awakening and the missing Sun Ring
When Imu appeared in Elbaf in Chapter 1179 on April 5, 2026, a ring of black flames sat behind his back. Rain God Zaza, shown in Chapter 1182 on May 10, 2026, had a ring of rain to match his title. Luffy is the Sun God, yet he has no ring of sun behind him. That absence hints he has not fully tapped his awakening. Completing it, and lighting up that Sun Ring, could be what makes his final Gear.
Growing his Supreme King Haki
The other route is Conqueror’s Haki. Silvers Rayleigh explained long ago that Supreme King Haki cannot be trained directly. It is the embodiment of the user’s spirit, so it only grows stronger when the user grows stronger. In practice, that means a new transformation would push Luffy’s Haki up alongside it, driving both toward Joy Boy’s level at once.
This lines up with the wider setup in Elbaf. Oda has already confirmed that both Zoro and Sanji will awaken and fully master Supreme King Haki here. Luffy tends to level up in step with his two wings, the way Enies Lobby gave Sanji Diable Jambe, Zoro Asura, and Luffy his early Gears, and Wano gave Sanji Ifrit Jambe, Zoro King of Hell, and Luffy his Gear 5 awakening. A matching jump for the captain fits that pattern.
What still has to happen
Luffy’s goal has been fixed since Chapter 968, where the story confirmed he must surpass Gol D. Roger, and Elbaf raises the bar higher by putting him against Imu and, eventually, Blackbeard. To go one step beyond even Joy Boy, the first pirate in the world, Gear 5 alone will not carry him. A stronger form is now a requirement, not a maybe.
Nothing about the final Gear has been officially confirmed yet, from its name to how it arrives, so the exact shape it takes is still open. What is settled is the direction.
