Hidden Treasures are the fiddliest side content in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Five separate Chance Encounters hand you an Old Drawing, drop a rough green search zone on your map, and leave the rest to you. The map marker never points at the chest itself, so the only way to finish one is to stand on the precise spot in the drawing and trigger the Oni Eyes.
Quick answer: The five chests are on a rooftop above Kiyomizu-zaka Slope, at the base of the small waterfall near Yasaka Pagoda, behind a large interior door in the temple by Kamo River – East, on the side balcony of a lone shrine building past Gojo Street – East, and on the top floor of Yasaka Pagoda itself. Walk to each spot and use the Oni Eyes to make the chest appear.
How the Hidden Treasure Chance Encounters work
The hunts open up once you reach the “To Live is to Suffer” chapter. Each one starts by talking to an NPC who hands over an Old Drawing, a faded picture that shows the chest’s surroundings rather than its coordinates. The first quest-giver is a woman standing just northwest of the Gojo Street – West Spirit Mirror.
Accepting a hunt marks a green boundary on the map covering the general area. Nothing inside that circle glows, and there is no follow-up marker. You compare the drawing to the landmarks around you, walk to the matching position, then use the Oni Gauntlet’s Oni Eyes. A golden chest materializes on the spot with equipment and skill upgrade materials inside, typically Fine Silk Cloth and Oni Stones.

Hidden Treasure No. 1: The rooftop above Kiyomizu-zaka Slope
Old Drawing No. 1 is blurry, but the X sits on a roof looking out toward a distant pagoda at the top of Kiyomizu-zaka Slope. That single detail is what makes this one solvable, because the marker itself covers a whole cluster of houses.
Hidden Treasures No. 2 and No. 5: The Yasaka Pagoda pair
Two of the five chests share the same landmark. Both start from the Yasaka Pagoda Spirit Mirror, but one sends you down to water level and the other sends you all the way to the roof.
No. 2: The base of the small waterfall
The drawing for this one shows three things once you squint at it — the pagoda, a ladder, and a waterfall. Zooming right in on the map makes ladders visible as icons, which is the fastest way to line yourself up. Otherwise, trace the nearby stream on the map until it drops into a waterfall.
Drop down to the foot of that small waterfall and use the Oni Eyes against the rock face. The chest surfaces right where the water lands.
No. 5: The top of Yasaka Pagoda
The last treasure is the most straightforward of the set. Head into Yasaka Pagoda and climb the chain of interior ladders until you come out on the upper rooftop. A handful of Genma are waiting up there, so clear them before doing anything else. With the roof quiet, move to the southern side of the upper level and use the Oni Eyes.
Hidden Treasure No. 3: Inside the temple gate near Kamo River – East
Old Drawing No. 3 marks a gate set into a tall wall. Eastern Kyoto only has a few structures that match, and the map marker narrows it to the large temple by the Kamo River – East Spirit Mirror, the one crawling with Genma. The catch is that the gate needs to be approached from the inside of the wall, not the street.
Hidden Treasure No. 4: The shrine balcony past Gojo Street – East
This is the awkward one. The chest sits beyond the Gojo Street – East Spirit Mirror in an area that is almost always thick with Genma, and there is no shortcut into it. You are looking for a single small shrine-like building in the northeast corner, and reaching it means taking the long southern route around the whole area.
When you get there, skip the interior. Walk around to the left side of the building, where a narrow balcony looks out over the rest of Eastern Kyoto. Use the Oni Eyes from that balcony to reveal the fourth chest.
How to confirm a Hidden Treasure is complete
A successful reveal is unmistakable. The chest fades into view as a golden container, opening it plays the reward pop-up listing the materials, and the Chance Encounter clears from your active objectives. If the objective is still listed on the map screen, the chest has not been opened yet.
When nothing happens, it is almost always one of three things. You are close to the right spot but not on it, since the reveal has a tight radius and the green zone is only a hint. You are on the wrong face of the structure, which is what trips people up on the temple gate and the shrine balcony. Or you have not actually accepted the Chance Encounter yet, in which case the chest cannot be revealed at all.
Tip: Buying the Oni Vision: Treasures, Oni Vision: Treasures 2, and Oni Vision: Search Range skills at a Spirit Mirror makes the wider sweep far less painful. Hold L2/LT and tap R2/RT while moving, and nearby chests light up through walls.
All five sit inside Eastern Kyoto, so there is no need to travel further afield, and none of them are permanently missable during the main story. Free roam stays open right up to the point of no return before “The Clash at Rendaino,” which gives you a clean window to sweep the remaining drawings before the finale.
