Patch 3.29.2 sharpens the two mechanics Grinding Gear Games leaned on for the Curse of the Allflame league, Abyss and Legion, with the headline change landing squarely on Abyss loot. Elite Abyssal monsters now carry innately higher item quantity, and the Abyss Scarab of Crystals spawns crystals far more often. The result is a noticeably richer farm than before the patch, without turning Abyss into a Kalandra-tier jackpot.
Quick answer: Slain elite Abyss monsters now drop more items and grant more experience, and the Abyss Scarab of Crystals creates an Abyssal Crystal on every non-final pit that closes. Runs are more profitable, but the extra quantity mostly stacks up as more corrupted six-links, not a flood of Divines.
Abyss elite and Crystal scarab changes
The core of the update is a straight buff to what comes out of Abyss pits. Elite Abyss monsters that spawn from the cracks now have increased effectiveness, which translates to more items dropped and more experience granted when you kill them. Effectiveness is a Path of Exile 2 idea, and GGG has essentially ported the same outcome back into the first game by baking higher item quantity into these elites.

The second big shift reworks the Abyss Scarab of Crystals. Previously it only created an Abyssal Crystal on pits that closed without a reward, and because later pits had a rising chance to contain rewards, very few crystals actually appeared. It now creates a crystal on every non-final pit that closes, and those crystals stack additively with other rewards and spawns. Each crystal raises the difficulty and the reward of every Abyss monster that spawns afterward, so the effect snowballs across a map.
| Change | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Elite Abyss monster loot | Standard quantity | Increased item quantity and experience |
| Abyss Scarab of Crystals | Crystal only on pits without a reward | Crystal on every non-final pit closing |
| Amanamu Abyss elite | Could spawn Lightless Serpent | Only spawns Lightless Abomination (more loot and XP) |
Two supporting fixes matter here. The Trial of Destruction Atlas passive, which rolls the number of pits twice and keeps the higher value, now also applies to chances for extra pits from nodes like Sustained Hordes rather than just the base pit count. And Abysses no longer spawn inside Breach Hive encounters, cutting down on tangled overlapping mechanics.
What the loot actually looks like now
The patch notes do not put a number on the size of the jump, and in practice the higher item quantity reads mostly as a bigger column of corrupted six-links dropping on the ground. It is a real improvement in profit over the pre-patch state, but Abyss is not the runaway loot piñata some hoped for. For comparison, a mid-league monster effectiveness change of this kind is what gave Path of Exile 2’s 0.4 league its heavy supply of Divines, so the direction is the same even if the magnitude in this case is smaller.
Note: the base loot problem that has dogged Abyss all league is not fully solved here. The mechanic still leans on jackpot drops such as high-roll Abyss Jewels, Stygian Vises, and chest rewards rather than a steady currency stream from every monster.
Voyage and Offerings to the Deep changes
Offerings to the Deep Altars are the other big winner. The chance for common currencies to convert into rarer currencies roughly doubled, and the altars now tell you the exact conversion they provide when you look at them. They also apply their conversion blessings to Mercenaries.
| Blessing | Old conversion chance | New conversion chance |
|---|---|---|
| Blessing of the Deep | 4% | 10% |
| Empowered Blessing of the Deep | 8% | 20% |
Those altars now appear less frequently. The trade-off is that each one is far more meaningful when it shows up, and across many Voyages you should end with a roughly equal or slightly higher total number of conversions, as long as you are finding and interacting with them.
A quiet but important fix affects Chart rewards. Every modifier that used to grant increased gold found on Charts now grants increased rarity of items found instead, because the gold bonus never actually worked in Charts and Voyages. On top of that, the Charted Charts inventory in the Voyage Planning UI is now twice as large, so you can bank more charts before running them.
Enemy Mercenary damage nerfs
Hostile Mercenaries were capable of one-shotting players, and 3.29.2 tones them down. Damage is lowered on several enemy Mercenary skills, and the Conflagration debuff is shortened.
- Reduced damage on Conflagration, Divine Ire, Flame Wall, Soulrend of Reaping, Storm Call, and Infernal Blow.
- Enemy Mercenary Conflagration now has a base debuff duration of 2 seconds, down from 4.
- Mercenaries can once again spawn in the Toxic Conduit and no longer block progress through the zone.
- Cardinal Mercenaries now correctly use their Wrath skill, both as enemies and as allies.
Charging Crystals of Permutations for rarer Uniques
Enshrouded items in Crystals of Permutations can now be charged up to three times, gaining Variant Rarity with each charge. The higher the Variant Rarity, the more likely the resulting Vestigial item is to be a rarer Unique. You can break out a Crystal to claim a Vestigial Unique as soon as you have charged it at least once, meaning you only need a single point of Variant Rarity to open it.
Charging is not always the right call. Every charge pushes the outcome toward rarer Uniques, which lowers the weight of common ones. If you are chasing something like Mageblood or Headhunter, more charges improve your odds. If your goal is a valuable implicit that comes from a common Unique such as The Gull, a single charge is enough to break the Crystal, and stacking more charges only reduces your chance of hitting that common base.
Other notable improvements
- A crafting bench has been added to the Menagerie.
- The amount of Wildwood Wisps gained from all sources within the Viridian Wildwood has been increased.
- Allflame Capsules can now be used by multiple players to send loot to the surface, with shared inventory capacity, and a button was added to take all loot at once.
- You can leave Allflame encounters using the backup capsule without placing all of the lanterns.
- The trade site can now search and filter for intangibility on items.
- Fixed the Arsenal Map boss not dropping loot or granting experience.
Cursed Ducats arriving next week
A follow-up patch is planned for next week and centers on a new Cursed Ducat system. Six different Cursed Ducats will be obtainable through endgame play as non-tradable quest items. The Voyage UI will gain three sockets, similar to the Voidstone sockets on the Atlas, and you can run up to three Ducats at once.
Each socketed Ducat raises the quantity and rarity of items dropped in Charts and Voyages while adding its own difficulty modifier. Charts and Voyages still open with no Ducats socketed, so the system works as an opt-in “choose your own difficulty” layer. You can pick the Ducats your build can handle and skip any whose downsides would get you killed. This is framed as a stopgap while the larger endgame overhaul planned for 3.30 is built out.
