Ghosts haunt the GLOOM biome in PEAK, and letting one catch you is dangerous. When a Ghost reaches you, it explodes and deals heavy cold damage, which stacks badly on top of the constant sleep effect the swamp already inflicts. The counter is fire. Any flame source in the GLOOM will “burn up” a Ghost, and destroying one unlocks the Exorcist Badge.

Quick answer: Reach the GLOOM biome, then destroy a Ghost by lighting a Candlestick and chasing the Ghost into the flame, ringing a Belltower while the Ghost is in range, or using a Faerie Light. The moment the Ghost pops, the Exorcist Badge unlocks.

Where Ghosts and the Exorcist Badge appear

The Exorcist Badge can only be earned in the GLOOM, the biome that comes after ALPINE. The full climbing order runs SHORE, ROOTS, ALPINE, GLOOM, so you need to progress through three earlier biomes before Ghosts become available to burn.

Head into the swamp, which sits deep below the mist. This area applies constant sleep damage, so treat it as a race. You want a flame source in hand quickly, both to hold off the sleep effect and to deal with the Ghost when it shows up.

Three ways to burn up a Ghost

You do not need one specific item for the badge. Any of the three fire sources below will destroy a Ghost when it enters the flame’s range.

Fire sourceWhere to find itHow it works
CandlestickLuggage in the GLOOMLight it, then chase the Ghost down and touch it with the flame. Stays lit for about 30 seconds and also blocks the sleep effect.
BelltowerScattered around the GLOOMRing the bell while the Ghost is near. The flame from the lit tower pops the Ghost in range.
Faerie LightAncient Idols and Ancient LuggageCarry it into the GLOOM and use it to burn the Ghost when it approaches.

Burn a Ghost with a Candlestick

Search the Luggage in the GLOOM until you find a Candlestick, then select it in your inventory. Do this fast, since the swamp is draining you with sleep damage the whole time.

Light the Candlestick. It stays lit for roughly 30 seconds, and while lit it stops the sleep effect from building up. That window is also how long you have to reach a Ghost.

Listen for the Ghost’s sound cue. When you hear it, move toward the Ghost with the lit Candlestick and chase it down until the flame reaches it. The Ghost bursts on contact and the badge unlocks.

Burn a Ghost with a Belltower

Find a Belltower in the GLOOM. These stone towers carry carved symbols such as a sun, a crescent moon, and a human figure, and ringing one also cancels the sleep effect.
Wait near the tower and let the Ghost drift toward you. Rather than chasing, you are baiting the Ghost into the radius of the flame the tower produces.
Hold the interact key to ring the bell while the Ghost is close. As the bell rings, the tower lights up and the Ghost is engulfed in flames and disintegrates, granting the Exorcist Badge.

Note: Ringing five Belltowers in a single expedition also earns the separate Bellringer Badge, so it is worth using this method if you are collecting GLOOM badges together.

Using a Faerie Light

The Faerie Light comes from Ancient Idols and Ancient Luggage rather than ordinary cases. If you already picked one up on the way to the GLOOM, you can use its flame the same way as a Candlestick, letting the Ghost enter the light to burn it.

How to confirm the badge unlocked

The Exorcist Badge triggers the instant a Ghost pops in a flame. There is no need to reach the campfire or escape first. Along with the badge, you unlock its cosmetics, the Gothic Outfit and Gothic Hat.

If a Ghost is not burning, the usual reason is range. The flame has to actually touch the Ghost, so with a Candlestick you often have to run it down, and with a Belltower the Ghost must be inside the tower’s flame radius when the bell rings. Keep your light source lit and stay close, since a spent Candlestick or an out-of-range Ghost will not count.

Because the GLOOM keeps sleep damage ticking the whole time, carry a Candlestick and ring Belltowers as you explore. That keeps you conscious long enough to line up the Ghost, land the burn, and walk away with the Exorcist Badge.
