You can build and claim a bed in Permafrost long before the game will actually let you sleep in it. Face the bed in freezing weather, pick Sleep, and the screen throws back a red warning instead of fading to black: TOO COLD TO REST. YOU NEED A HEAT SOURCE!. The fix is a lit fire right next to where you rest, and an equipped Makeshift Heater did not do the job.

Quick answer: Build a Campfire (2 Stone) beside the bed, load it with Wood and turn it on, then hold F at the bed and release the key over Sleep.

Why the bed shows “Too Cold to Rest”

On Story difficulty, with the bed in the open and the readout at -27°C, choosing Sleep gave the red line instead of sleep. An equipped Makeshift Heater did not count as a heat source.

A lit Campfire placed right beside the bed does count. Once the fire is burning beside the bed, Sleep works at once. The bed has to stand on a Wooden Foundation, and it needed no walls or roof to be slept in.

The Bed costs 5 Cloth and 5 Wood.

What you need before you start

  • A bed already built on a Wooden Foundation.
  • 2 Stone to build a Campfire.
  • A few pieces of Wood for fuel. One piece burns about a minute, so bring 3 or more.

The Campfire blueprint is known from the start, so there is nothing to unlock first. It simply needs to sit close enough to the bed to warm the spot.

Build and light a Campfire next to the bed

Press B for the Building Tool, press the right mouse button to open the BUILDING menu and switch to the Survival tab. Select the Campfire, which costs 2 Stone.
Place the green preview on the ground right beside the bed and confirm it. If the spot reads AREA OBSTRUCTED, clear the clutter or nudge the preview until it turns green, then build.
Press F on the finished Campfire to open its COOKING panel. Find the FUEL part, then double-click Wood in your backpack to load it. Each double-click adds one piece, so load 3 or more before you light it. Press X to TURN ON.

With 3 Wood loaded the timer read 2m once the first piece had lit: enough to fall asleep.

Choose Sleep from the Rest wheel

A bed you have claimed shows Press F Rest and Hold F more options. Keep F held to open a small wheel with two choices, Rest and Sleep.

Move the mouse over your choice, then release F; clicking is unnecessary. If you let go of F with the pointer off both choices, nothing is selected. Point to Sleep and let go of F; the display turns black while time advances.

What sleeping restores

On Story difficulty, sleeping from 10:15 ran the clock through to about 06:00 the next morning, ending with the banner THE SUN IS RISING and the note that temperature will rise. The sleep itself lasted about 20 real seconds. Energy went from 0 to 299 of a maximum 300, and the effect Well Rested appeared.

Hunger barely moved across the night, reading 130 before sleep and 125 on waking on Story difficulty. Going to bed with an empty Energy bar had carried the Tired effect, whose tooltip reads “Fatigue affects energy recovery. Rest would help. Stamina Gain Rate -25 %. Remedy: Rest”.

That full run to sunrise and the refilled Energy bar come from choosing Sleep. Rest is the wheel’s other option if you only want a shorter recovery. Either way, once the fire is lit beside a bed on a foundation, the “Too Cold to Rest” block is gone and the bed behaves normally.
