Soul facing Master Bi Hai's golden bell in the arena, Phantom Blade Zero

Quick answer: Break Master Bi Hai’s golden bell with heavy shield-breaking hits from the Tianxuan Bronze Sword and charged Dread Axe cleaves, and kill his summoned monks. The bell shields him from all damage while it stands.

How the Master Bi Hai bell fight works

The fight opens with Master Bi Hai sitting cross-legged inside a giant golden bell. He summons three bronze monks and stays put while they do all the fighting. Each monk carries its own shield bar.

Your job in this phase is the bell. Once it breaks, he drops out into the open and fights you hand to hand. While the bell stands, your attacks do not move his health bar; killing a monk reduces his health.

The bell does not stay gone. It returns later with a fresh set of monks, first iron monks carrying ring blades, then gold monks after that.

Bronze monk attacks and damage

The bronze monks are the real threat in the opening phase. They keep up pressure while you are busy hitting the bell.

  • At point-blank range, they throw punches and quick fist combinations.
  • They leap forward with a flying kick to cover ground quickly.
  • Coordinated attacks from three sides at once, often while you swing at the bell.

DifficultyDamage per hitOver two minutes
PATHBREAKERAbout 60 to 300 HP26 hits in under two minutes
WAYFARERAbout 65 HP on averageAbout 1,900 HP over 29 hits

Watch the monks while you attack the bell: they deal damage, and killing one cracks the bell. Each monk you kill also chips away a substantial section of the bell and reduces Master Bi Hai’s health.

Breaking the golden bell: Weapons that work

Heavy attacks that break shields wear the bell down; killing a monk also takes a large piece off it. Twin blades like Sanguine Twin barely scratch it, so equip a different loadout.

WeaponEffect on the bell
Dread Axe (charged cleave)Roughly a fifth per cleave
Tianxuan Bronze SwordA visible chip every combo
Sanguine TwinBarely scratches it

Each charged Dread Axe cleave consumes one Remnant Spark from your reserve. If you have none stored, the screen displays “Out of Remnant Spark”; landing hits restores Sparks, but only gradually. Use your saved Sparks for cleaves as soon as the fight begins.

The Tianxuan Bronze Sword card reads “high Shield-Breaking power when attacking and rock-solid defense when blocking”. On WAYFARER, three charged cleaves plus the sword bring the bell down to about a fifth in under two minutes. On PATHBREAKER, twin blades with three cleaves leave it near 40 percent.

During this fight the game shows the hint “Press 1 to switch weapons and fully restore Sha-Chi!” Carry the Tianxuan Bronze Sword in a main weapon slot, then switch to it for the bell to refill Sha-Chi at the same time.

The sword’s trait, Natural Order, “Reduces Sha-Chi consumption when blocking attacks, but disables parrying”, so block with it instead of trying to parry.

Iron monks in the later bell phase

When the bell returns, the monks become darker iron figures. Some wield large ring blades and sweep them through wide arcs.

Others jump in with a blade held overhead. Each has a separate shield bar, and defeating one still cracks the bell, so stick with the same plan.

Master Bi Hai’s moveset outside the bell

Out of the bell, Master Bi Hai mixes close-range strikes with a ranged projectile. Between attacks he backs off and keeps his distance, so expect to chase him.

AttackWhat it does
Close strikeSteps in, hits with hands and feet at arm’s length
Fist waveGolden shockwave that crosses the arena and bursts on impact
Palm strikeStraight palm thrust; can be parried or blocked
Golden glowA golden flash spreads across the arena before he unleashes a burst of attacks.

The fist wave is the attack that reaches you at range, and on PATHBREAKER it lands for about 76 HP early in the fight.

When he starts glowing gold, a flurry is coming, so get your guard up.

The palm strike is the cleanest opening to answer with a block or parry, though parrying is off the table while you hold the Tianxuan Bronze Sword.

The fight rewards the Kuye Temple Prayer Beads and 15,600 Remnant Dust. For the arena and what to expect on the way in, see where to find Master Bi Hai.
