Project Zomboid: How to Get Rid of Corpse Sickness

Move away from the pile, clear the bodies, and stay well-fed to reverse the Queasy moodle before it turns into a fatal fever.

Corpse Sickness in Project Zomboid is an environmental illness that builds up when too many rotting bodies pile up near your survivor. It starts as a Queasy moodle and, left alone, climbs through Nauseous and Sick to a Fever that can kill you. The good news is that it is fully reversible, unlike the Knox Virus, so long as you break contact with the corpses fast.

Quick answer: Get at least 13 tiles away from the rotting bodies (or move to a different floor), then stay well-fed and rested until the Queasy moodle fades. Clearing or burning the corpses stops the sickness from returning.

What triggers Corpse Sickness

The game tracks how many dead bodies are near your character. Once more than 20 corpses are piled together and have reached the rotting stage, the toxicity starts to accumulate. You will know the bodies have turned when you can see and hear flies buzzing around them. Standing in that zone raises your sickness level, and the closer you are, the faster it climbs.

Distance is measured at 13 tiles from the source. If the corpses are outdoors, you need to be at least 13 tiles away outside of an infested building, or on a different floor if the source is indoors. That verticality matters. In a multi-story building you can often escape the sickness by moving to the second floor or the roof, even with bodies littering the street below.

The illness worsens in stages, and each stage does more to your survivor. Certain negative traits, like Slow Healer, also slow how quickly you recover.

Moodle stageTriggers atEffect
QueasySickness above 25%Mild body-heat increase; first warning sign
NauseousSickness above 50%Carrying capacity down 1; slower healing
SickSickness above 75%Carrying capacity down 2; much slower healing
FeverSickness above 90%Weak and hyperthermic; danger of death

Cure it by moving to clean air

There is no medicine for Corpse Sickness. Antibiotics only treat infected wounds, so they will do nothing here. The cure is spatial. Once you leave the death zone, the toxicity stops building and your body begins to repair the damage.

Walk out of the fly zone until the buzzing stops. Put at least 13 tiles between yourself and the pile, or climb to a floor above the bodies if you are indoors.
Keep your survivor Well Fed and rested. The Well Fed moodle boosts your healing rate, and sleeping lets you pass the time while the sickness clears. Expect the Queasy moodle to take roughly half an in-game day to vanish once you are in a clean area.
Do not rest inside the same contaminated space. Sleeping next to the corpses will not fix anything and can make you worse. Find a room or building away from the smell.

You know it worked when the Queasy icon disappears from your moodle stack and your healing returns to normal. If the moodle keeps climbing after you move, you are still within range of rotting bodies, or the sickness came from something else, such as bad food or a zombie wound.

Dispose of corpses to prevent it

Preventing the sickness is far easier than curing it. Keeping bodies away from your base means you never accumulate toxicity in the first place. You have three reliable ways to remove them.

Dig graves

Graves are the safest, most flexible option, and each one holds up to five bodies. Find a spade or shovel, dig a hole almost anywhere it makes sense, then drag the corpses in. The trade-off is speed. Digging takes a while, and you are exposed to anything wandering nearby while you do it.

Burn the corpses

Burning is faster than digging but needs a jerry can of fuel and a firestarter such as a lighter or matches. Pile the bodies together, right-click them with the materials in your inventory, and choose the “Burn Corpse” option. Light them and step back. Do this well away from your base and any foliage, because the fire can spread and take out the whole neighborhood.

A campfire works the same way. Line the bodies up so they touch the fire before you light it, and they burn down to ash within about 15 seconds. If a corpse does not vanish, it is not touching the flames. Never place bodies while the fire is already lit, or your survivor risks severe burns.

Drop them in a dumpster

Dumpsters and smaller trash cans can delete items permanently, which makes them a limitless way to dispose of bodies. Carry a corpse to a dumpster, right-click it, and pick “Drop Corpse Into Dumpster.” Then open the dumpster’s inventory and hit Delete All.

Reduce symptoms while you clean up

Sometimes you have to work in the middle of a body pile to clear it. A face covering limits how much the dead affect you. Respirators and gas masks cut down the effect of the Bad Smell moodle that leads to the sickness, so finding one early makes corpse cleanup far safer.

Lemongrass helps you push through nausea and sickness faster. You can forage for it in forested areas, and the Herbalist trait or reading the Herbalist magazine helps you identify it reliably. Eating it lowers your internal sickness level, which speeds recovery once you have moved to clean air.

Note: if your nausea followed a zombie bite, laceration, or scratch rather than corpse exposure, it is likely the Knox Virus, which has no cure in the default modes. Check your health panel for wounds before assuming corpses are the cause. If the panel is clear and you have not eaten raw or rotten food, the bodies around you are almost certainly the culprit, and distance is all you need.
