Read Ley Line is the racial ability that separates High Order Skyborne from every other elf in World of Warcraft: Forever. It is available from level 1, it costs nothing, and cast in the right spot it doubles your health and mana regeneration for a full 15 minutes. Cast it in the wrong spot and you get 15 seconds, which is barely enough time to notice it happened.
Quick answer: Stand directly on the purple energy stream marked by a purple circle on your map, then cast Read Ley Line out of combat. The Energized buff lasts 15 minutes.
Read Ley Line: Effect, duration and cooldown
Read Ley Line is exclusive to the Alliance branch of the race. If you picked Horde at character creation and became a Windshaper Skyborne, you have Skysight instead, which works on elemental convergences rather than ley lines. Everything below applies only to High Order characters.

The tooltip carries a “Requires Ley Line” line, but that refers to the long version of the buff rather than the spell being locked. You can press the button out in the world wherever you like, it just fizzles down to the short 15-second version when nothing is feeding it. Inside instances there are no ley lines to tap, so it always gives the short duration there.
How to find a ley line on the map and in the world
Ley lines are not hidden. They are flagged in the interface and they are loud in the world, which means the hard part is travel time rather than discovery.
- A distinct purple circular icon sits on both the world map and the minimap wherever a ley line runs.
- On the ground, a ley line looks like crackling purple and blue electrical current flowing along the terrain.
- They tend to surface at ancient ruins, stone circles and standing pillars rather than in open fields.
- The Thendal Standing Stones in Thendal Grove are a clear early example, with the stream visible at the base of the stonework.
Check your minimap for the purple marker while you are questing anyway. Because the buff runs for 15 minutes, the cheapest way to use it is to top up at whichever ley line you happen to pass rather than making a dedicated trip.

How to confirm the Energized buff applied
Success is visible immediately. A new icon called Energized appears in your buff bar the moment the channel completes. Hover over it and the tooltip reads “Mana and health regeneration rate increased by 100%,” with the remaining time underneath.
That timer is your check. If it shows minutes, the ley line registered and you have the long version. If it counts down from 15 seconds, the game did not consider you close enough to the current, so reposition and wait out the cooldown before trying again.
When Read Ley Line is worth the detour
This is a world utility buff, not a combat cooldown. Doubled out-of-combat regeneration cuts the eating and drinking downtime between pulls, which matters most while grinding mobs at low levels and while farming in the open world later on. Casters and healers feel it most, since mana is the resource that usually dictates how long a farming session lasts.
What it will not do is carry you through a dungeon or a raid. You cannot start it in combat, and away from a ley line the 15-second window does very little, so plan around topping up before you head somewhere rather than expecting it to hold up mid-fight. Refresh it at the nearest purple marker whenever the timer runs low and the ability quietly pays for itself over a long session.
