Scream And Run Walkthrough: Escaping the School, Playground, and Mines

How to clear all three maps and slip past the Cat in the Hat, Ronald McDonald, and Dark Thomas.

How to clear all three maps and slip past the Cat in the Hat, Ronald McDonald, and Dark Thomas.

Scream And Run drops you into a dark map with one goal: gather the items that unlock your exit before the resident monster reaches you. There are three maps to escape — the School, the Playground, and the Mines — and each one pairs a different objective with a different hunter. The common thread across all three is sound. Every killer alerts you to its position through music and audio cues, so listening carefully matters as much as moving quickly.

Quick answer: Collect each map’s required items — five colored keys in the School, five keys plus a screwdriver in the Playground, and a pickaxe, coal, six TNT and a lighter in the Mines — then unlock or blast the exit while breaking the monster’s line of sight.

Core survival mechanics that apply to every map

Before tackling any specific map, get comfortable with the two indicators that decide your run. Your sound bar sits in the bottom-left of the screen and rises when you or your teammates run, slide, or interact with objects. Loud actions can draw the killer straight to you, so watch what the whole team is doing, not just yourself. Above the sound bar are three hearts. Each one represents a jumpscare you can survive, and losing all three ends the level.

Knowing when to run, slide, crouch, and stay quiet is the difference between escaping and restarting. Sliding gives you a quick burst of speed that helps you round corners and shake a chase, while standing still and silent is often the safest response when a monster is nearby.

How to escape the School map

The School is laid out in a square, which makes it the easiest map to navigate. Your main enemy here is the darkness, so keep your flashlight handy. The objective is to find five keys — green, red, yellow, pink, and silver — hidden inside black backpacks. Those backpacks spawn in ordinary places such as classrooms, the bathroom, hallways, and the gym, and their locations are randomized every time you replay, so do not expect them where you last found them.

Search the room you spawn in first. Open any backpack sitting on a desk to grab your first key, then move out into the connected areas.
Crawl through low openings to reach cut-off rooms like the library. These tight gaps let you slip between areas while staying low and quiet.

Carry each key you find back to the locked exit doors and use it on the matching colored padlock. The exit stays sealed until all five padlocks are open.

Sweep the remaining classrooms and hallway storage spots for the keys you still need. Keep your flashlight scanning desks and corners, but stay alert while you dig through backpacks.

How to escape the Cat in the Hat

The Cat in the Hat is one of the quieter hunters. It does not always produce a sound cue, which lets it stalk up on you if you are not watching your surroundings, so glance behind you often while moving. When it does make noise, it lets out a chuckle, sometimes speaking a catchphrase over a silly tune. If you hear it lock onto you, run and break its line of sight by cutting around corners.

To lose it, duck into the nearest classroom and stand still in the farthest corner without making a sound. In a group, you can also position a teammate between you and the Cat so it grabs them instead. The death animation buys you enough time to sprint away.

How to escape the Playground map

The Playground starts out bright and colorful before the lights cut out. Its terrain works in your favor, with corners, slides, and ball pits all serving as hiding spots. As on the School map, you search backpacks for five colored keys, but there is an extra objective here. One of the bags holds a screwdriver, which is essential for opening the exit.

Search backpacks for the five keys and the screwdriver. The screwdriver is the item that lets you deal with the power box, so prioritize finding it.

Use the screwdriver on the power box. This starts a series of quick-time events where you must hit the skill checks to power the gates leading to the other side of the map.
With the gates open, keep searching for the remaining keys. Expect to do part of this in the dark for a few seconds after the power shifts.
Take the final key back to the exit door. Check your surroundings before you start the unlock, because the action is slow and you can be caught mid-animation.

How to escape Ronald McDonald

Ronald McDonald announces himself with the eerie pitter-patter of his footsteps, which gives you a head start to move before he closes in. During the chase, cut as many corners as you can. If his music grows wilder, he is speeding up. When the music starts to fade you are pulling away, and if it stops completely you are in the clear.

His hitbox is small, so if he corners you, wait for him to lunge and dash to the side at the last second to juke past him.

How to escape the Mines map

The Mines carry the most objectives of any map, and the layout plays like a labyrinth with no map to guide you. Expect to replay it a few times before the terrain feels familiar. Progress runs through a chain of items, each unlocking the next stage of your escape.

Search the desks scattered around the tunnels and pick up a pickaxe. This tool lets you mine the coal piles found on the ground.

Mine coal and feed it into the furnaces around the map. Powering a furnace opens a gate that leads you deeper toward your goal.
Through the opened gates, hunt down TNT and a lighter, found the same way as the other items on desks and in the terrain.
Collect a full set of six TNT, then use them and the lighter on the rockpile. Stand back and wait for the blast to open your getaway route to safety.

How to escape Dark Thomas

Dark Thomas is a spider-like train that leaves little time to react before it jumpscares you. Do not assume the train tracks contain it, because it easily leaves them and keeps chasing on eight legs. It is faster than you in a straight sprint, so never run in a straight line.

Lean on the slide control instead. A slide gives you a fast burst that is usually enough to wiggle out of its immediate reach and get behind a corner or under a low door opening that only players can pass. Stay quiet even after you reach a safe room, since Dark Thomas hunts by stalking, listening, and running its prey down.

How you know you escaped

Each map confirms your escape in a clear way. In the School and Playground, opening the last padlock swings the exit door open and lets you run out into the light to complete the run. In the Mines, the successful TNT blast carves a getaway route through the rockpile, and following it out ends the level. As long as you still have at least one heart when you clear that final action, the escape counts.
