Seth, the Book-Carrying Flower Boss in Deltarune Chapter 5

Who Seth is, how they fight beside Aqua, and the two ACTs that matter in the encounter.

Who Seth is, how they fight beside Aqua, and the two ACTs that matter in the encounter.

Seth is one of the flower enemies introduced in Chapter 5 of Deltarune, a purple Darkner who shows up as part of Aqua’s encounter rather than as a lone threat. They are one of Asgore’s flowers, a group that also includes Flowery, Aqua, Yellow, Blue, Orange, and Green, and they almost always appear at Aqua’s side during the fight.

Quick answer: Seth is a Chapter 5 enemy who battles together with Aqua. To spare the pair without defeating them, use the FlatterX ACT, which grants 50% of the Mercy needed to end the encounter peacefully.

Where Seth appears and who they fight with

Seth turns up during the group’s adventure through Chapter 5 as part of a two-character battle. Kris and the Fun Gang face Seth and Aqua together, which makes this a paired encounter rather than a one-on-one. The fight is set up around their contrasting roles, summed up by the encounter flavor text that reads, “Aqua brings the sword! Seth brings the pen!”

That line points to how the duo functions. Aqua handles the aggressive, sword-swinging side of the fight, while Seth backs them up and tries to support their attacks. Seth specifically lines up in the second battle against Aqua, so you encounter them once the pairing comes into play.

How to spare Seth and Aqua

The pacifist route through this encounter runs through ACTs, and two of them are worth knowing. Check gives you a read on the enemy, while FlatterX is the one that moves you toward Mercy.

Because FlatterX provides half of the required Mercy, you will need to apply it across the fight to fully fill the meter before sparing becomes available. You know it worked when the Mercy option lets you end the battle without bringing the pair’s HP down.

What Seth looks like

Seth is a purple, anthropomorphic Darkner who wears glasses and has maroon hair. Their outfit is lavender, and the most recognizable detail is the book they carry with them at all times. That book ties directly into how they behave in the fight, since Seth leans on study and planning instead of brute force.

Seth’s personality and dynamic with Aqua

Seth reads as the brains of the pairing. They are intellectual, bring up their research often, and prefer to make careful plans before acting. That studious streak comes with a stand-offish edge, especially toward Aqua, whose antics tend to frustrate them.

Even so, Seth is genuinely helpful and spends much of the encounter trying to assist Aqua’s attacks. The friction shows up in how they handle blame, often deflecting criticism they receive back onto Aqua. The result is a duo that works together while clearly clashing in temperament.

The flower group and Seth’s name

Seth belongs to Asgore’s flowers, and most members of that set are named after colors, including Yellow, Blue, Orange, and Green. Seth and Flowery are the two that break the pattern, with Flowery acting as the group’s lead. Seth’s odd-one-out name has become a small point of interest among players for exactly that reason.

Note: References disagree on how to describe Seth, with some listing they/them pronouns and others using she/her. Either way, the character’s role in the encounter and the ACTs needed to spare them stay the same.

If you are working through Chapter 5 and want a clean run past this fight, the practical takeaway is short. Treat Seth as the support half of an Aqua-led duo, lean on FlatterX to build Mercy, and spare the pair once the meter fills.
