Behind the counter of the roadside gas station in Shift at Midnight, some of the people you serve are not people at all. Doppelgangers copy ordinary customers, and letting one finish its transaction and leave means it comes back after the shift as a monster that hunts you. Knowing who is fake on each night is the difference between a quiet closing routine and a frantic scramble to barricade the doors.
Quick answer: On Night 1 the two doppelgangers are always Nathan Calloway and Julietta Granger. Every other night is randomized per session, so treat the tables below as a reference rather than a fixed script, and still verify each customer yourself.

Doppelgangers by night in Story Mode
Only Night 1 has a locked lineup. From Night 2 onward the customer order and even who turns out to be fake can shift between playthroughs, so a name marked human here may arrive as a doppelganger for another player. Use the list to know who to watch, not as a guarantee.
| Night | Doppelgangers | Confirmed humans |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nathan Calloway, Julietta Granger | Clyde Dawson, Bonnie McCree, Kevin Larson |
| 2 | Natasha Lin, Emilia Carter, Norbert | Roger Conroy, Tyler Brackett, Ricky Lawson, Ryan Holt |

A face being human once does not keep it human. Some customers appear as ordinary people early, then return later as copies after the creature has replaced them. Do not skip a check just because you recognize someone.
- Clyde Dawson is human on Night 1 and Night 4, but arrives as a doppelganger on Night 9.
- Andal Khan passes as human on his first Night 11 visit, then comes back that same night as a fake.
- Tommy Delgado and Louisa Mari both have a fake first visit followed by a genuine second visit on their respective nights.
How to spot a doppelganger before it leaves
You get up to five questions per customer, plus their ID and the NET Database on your terminal. The goal is to find a contradiction between what they say, what they look like, and what their record shows.
- Ask about their date of birth, occupation, and appearance, then compare the answers to the ID.
- Confirm the ID is real by checking for a barcode. Run passports and driving licenses through the computer.
- Watch for a skin color that does not match the ID, a scar on the wrong side of the face, or other small physical mismatches.
- Some are blatant, such as a well-mannered bear, a naked man rolling down the aisles, or a record confirming the person is deceased.
Once you are sure someone is not human, use a weapon to take them out during the shift. Shooting a genuine customer is a mistake, though, because it docks part of your earnings. Question thoroughly before you commit.
What happens if one escapes
Timing matters. Firing on a doppelganger after it has already completed its transaction does nothing. It will still come back as a monster even if you shoot it on the way out. You have to catch it before the sale closes.
Miss one, and it returns when you lock up as an entity. At that point you get 60 seconds to arm yourself, board the three doors with planks using the interact key, and set traps before the creatures spawn. Hide in the vents scattered around the stockroom and shop, but do not linger. A mass of innards drops through the shafts to force you back out. The more doppelgangers you let loose, the stronger and more numerous the monsters that hunt you.
You will know a shift is clean when no hunt triggers at lockup and you can walk to the bus to finish the night. Before that, clear any blood, meat, and mess so your store rating holds. The safest habit is simple. Interrogate every customer, verify against the terminal, and never let a suspected fake walk out the door.
