Shift at Midnight: How to Get All Three Endings (True, Grave Decision, Empty Home)

Two late-game decisions decide whether your pet goose and Sheriff Clyde live or die after the thirteenth night.

Two late-game decisions decide whether your pet goose and Sheriff Clyde live or die after the thirteenth night.

Everything in Shift at Midnight comes down to two levers once you reach the end of Story Mode. The game has three endings, and none of them care how many doppelgangers you shot. What matters is whether you call Sheriff Clyde after the twelfth shift and whether your personal funds reach the $250 needed for your pet goose’s surgery by the time the veterinarian checks your balance.

Quick answer: For the True Ending, refuse the Clyde call and finish Shift 13 with $250 or more in personal funds. Call Clyde to guarantee the surgery but lose him in Grave Decision. Refuse Clyde while below $250 to trigger Empty Home, where the goose dies.

The two decisions that set your ending

Story Mode runs for 13 night shifts. Your pet falls ill early and survives on medicine for a while, but eventually the illness stops responding and the vet calls for surgery instead. That surgery costs $250 and must be paid within three days of the warning, which arrives after you clear the tenth shift.

The Clyde choice appears after Shift 12, before the final night. Calling him locks your run into one path no matter your balance. Refusing him keeps him alive but leaves the surgery bill entirely on you. The table below shows exactly what each combination produces.

EndingCall Clyde?Personal fundsOutcome
True EndingNo$250 or moreBoth the goose and Clyde survive; the pet joins later shifts and post-story mode opens
Grave DecisionYesAny amountThe goose survives and post-story mode opens, but Clyde dies and gets a funeral
Empty HomeNoBelow $250Clyde lives, but the surgery cannot be paid and the goose dies

Note: Refusing Clyde does not automatically save everyone. It only protects him. You still have to pay the $250 yourself, and coming up short sends you straight to Empty Home.

Personal funds are the only money that pays for surgery

A run tracks separate balances, and mixing them up is the most common way to lose the goose. Only your personal funds cover the medicine bills and the surgery. Store money never touches them.

BalanceWhat it doesPays for surgery?
Store quotaConfirms the store earned enough revenue to complete the shiftNo
Store-shopping balanceBuys traps, weapons, ammunition, healing, stock, boards, and decorationsNo
Personal fundsPays your medicine bills and the $250 surgeryYes

Because store spending is a separate pool, buy every trap and item you need to survive the final Hunt. Skipping defense does not save surgery money and can force a Shift 13 reset. Your personal payout works out to roughly a $10 shift wage plus about 10% of store revenue when you beat the quota, with deductions when a real human is killed. Treat that as a planning estimate, not a fixed guarantee.

How the $250 deadline and Shift 13 payout work together

You do not need the full $250 the moment the Clyde choice appears. The payout from Shift 13 is added to your personal total before the vet checks your balance, so a small shortfall can still close on the last night. The order runs like this: surgery is announced, you earn through Shift 12, you make the Clyde choice, you complete Shift 13, the final payout lands, and only then does the vet look for $250.

That timing makes the final night tight. A run can finish at $257 and clear the $250 fee with only $7 to spare. A large gap is different. If you are far short heading into the choice, one more shift usually will not rescue you, and Clyde becomes the safer call.

How to get the True Ending (both survive)

The True Ending keeps the goose and Clyde alive and carries the strictest requirement. Everything below protects your personal income across the days after surgery is announced.

Pay earlier medicine bills as they come up so they do not drain the funds you need later, but do not pay for medicine every single time. Treat $250 as your active target the moment surgery is announced.
Protect your personal income on the final days. Verify each customer before shooting, since a wrong human kill removes that transaction and docks your pay. Keep the checkout moving so waiting customers do not leave without paying.

Reach the Clyde choice with $250 secured, or with only a realistic final-night gap, then select Don’t Call Clyde.
Complete Shift 13 normally and buy the traps, ammunition, healing, and boards you need to survive. Those purchases come from the store-shopping balance and do not reduce your surgery money.
Pay the veterinarian directly once the final payout arrives. You know it worked when the operation succeeds, the goose survives, Clyde still visits with cheap beer, post-story mode unlocks, and the pet becomes available on future shifts.

To squeeze out extra income before that final check, search for Tokens at the start of the night before reading the notice board, spin the wheel to boost the day’s revenue, and clean up any mess from shot doppelgangers with the sledgehammer and hose rather than the slower mop. Serve doppelgangers, finish their transaction, then eliminate them to take their money, unless it is a Blood Moon.

How to get Grave Decision (Clyde dies)

Grave Decision saves the goose by sacrificing Clyde. On the twelfth night, after the shift, choose to call Sheriff Clyde. He visits the store the next day, an anonymous source covers the full surgery bill, and the pet lives, but Clyde does not make it and receives a funeral. The game frames you as responsible even though you never pull the trigger yourself.

This is the route to take when your personal funds sit far below $250 with only Shift 13 left, and keeping the goose alive matters more than saving Clyde. You do not have to sabotage your own economy. Selecting the call produces the outcome on its own, and the pet still joins you in Endless Mode afterward.

How to get Empty Home (the goose dies)

Empty Home triggers when you protect Clyde but fail to fund the surgery. Reach the Clyde decision below $250, choose Don’t Call Clyde, complete Shift 13, and arrive at the veterinarian still under $250. The ending screen states plainly that the surgery cost more than you had, so the goose could not be saved.

Clyde lives because you refused to call him. The pet dies because the money target was never met. Repeated human-kill penalties, customers leaving without paying, weak revenue on the final days, or turning down the call while far short of $250 are the usual causes.

Mistakes that cost you an ending

MistakeResult
Refusing Clyde while far below $250Clyde survives, but the run likely ends in Empty Home
Calling Clyde after already securing $250The goose survives, but Grave Decision replaces the True Ending
Confusing the store quota with personal fundsThe shift passes while the surgery stays unpaid
Skipping essential traps to save moneyStore purchases use a separate balance, and missing defense can reset Shift 13
Leaving the checkout blockedWaiting customers leave and cut your final-night income

All three outcomes appear right after the vet visit on Night 13, so you will know your ending before the credits roll. Because reloading the Shift 12 choice is not guaranteed to work on every platform, the cleanest way to see everything is to plan three separate runs. Chase the True Ending first since it has the tightest financial requirement, take Grave Decision by calling Clyde, and finish with Empty Home by refusing the call while under $250. Once you know your balance heading into Night 12, the result is entirely in your hands.
