In Shift at Midnight, the gas station counter is a screening station. Some customers who walk through the doors are not people at all. They are doppelgangers wearing a human face, and every one you let leave the store comes back after your shift as something far worse. The job is to catch them while they are still standing at the register.
Quick answer: Question each customer about their date of birth, occupation, and appearance, then compare their answers against their ID and the NET Database terminal. If the ID lacks a barcode, the skin tone does not match the photo, the record lists them as deceased, or a physical detail is wrong (like a scar on the wrong side of the face), they are a doppelganger. Eliminate them before they exit, or they return at night as an entity.

How the doppelganger check works
Doppelgangers are creatures of unknown origin that impersonate humans and drift into the store while you work the night shift. You have a small toolkit to expose them, and you are expected to use all of it before making a call. Every customer can be asked up to five questions, and their story has to line up with the paperwork.
The three pressures of the job run at the same time. You keep the station running by stocking shelves, taking deliveries, cleaning, and hitting your nightly quota. You verify each customer at the counter. And if a fake gets past you, the shift turns into survival. Get the verification right and the last part never happens.
- Ask about date of birth, occupation, and appearance, then look for answers that contradict the ID.
- Confirm the ID is legitimate. A real one has a barcode.
- Run passports and driving licenses through the store computer, especially for drivers who refuse to hand over their ID.
- Watch behavior and appearance closely, similar to reading tells in That’s Not My Neighbor.
Some tells are loud. A well-mannered bear, a naked man rolling down the aisles, or a customer whose record confirms they are already dead leaves little doubt. Others are quiet, like a skin tone that does not match the photo or a small mismatch between what a person claims and what their ID shows.

| Check | What a doppelganger reveals |
|---|---|
| ID legitimacy | No barcode on the ID, or the document fails when run through the store computer. |
| Photo vs. person | Skin color differs from the ID photo, or a facial mark sits on the wrong side. |
| Database record | The NET Database confirms the customer is deceased. |
| Questioning | Claims about their job or appearance conflict with what the ID states. |
| Behavior and looks | Openly inhuman traits, from a talking bear to a figure that blends into the wall. |
Note: Charging a doppelganger for their purchase and then shooting them still counts as a failure. Correctly identifying the fake is what matters, not the sale, so make the call before they complete their business and walk out.

Known doppelgangers in the store
Doppelgangers appear both as copies of specific named customers and as distinct creature types that show up around the station. Because shifts are randomly generated, a customer you spared one night can return the next with their status flipped, so no face is permanently safe.
| Named copies | Creature-type doppelgangers |
|---|---|
| Nathan Calloway’s Doppelganger | Car Doppelganger |
| Julietta Granger’s Doppelganger | Elongated Doppelganger |
| Brandon Keller’s Doppelganger | Forest Doppelganger |
| Judith Calhoun’s Doppelganger | |
| Jade Sinclair’s Doppelganger | |
| Tommy Delgado’s Doppelganger | |
| Clyde Dawson’s Doppelganger |
Clyde Dawson is a familiar face who returns across multiple nights, sometimes as himself and sometimes not, which is exactly why you re-verify every regular each shift. The Elongated Doppelganger stands out with its tall, long-limbed employee frame.

Entities: what a missed doppelganger becomes
Leaving a doppelganger alive invites it back as an entity, and each escape strengthens the monsters that visit you after the shift. Entities can appear at the start of or during a shift in both Story and Endless Mode. The Entity itself, a spider that sprouts eight legs and spins webs, always shows up during a hunt or a Blood Moon, and other variants can join it when you let a fake walk out.
| Entity | Behavior | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| The Entity | Spider that grows eight legs from a human body and spins webs. | Hide, then use the arsenal once it unlocks. |
| Shrieking Doll | Small entity that crawls along the floor. | Kill with traps and melee weapons. |
| Demented | Long-limbed, moves fast when unobserved. | Stare to freeze it in place, look away to lure it into traps. |
| Marionette | Cloaked figure that floats. | Rewind the music box on the shop floor before the song finishes a third time. |
| The Dentist | Looks like the break-room corpse; stalks the forest and the bus at shift’s end. | Run, keep the open mic off, and do not look back until it gives up. |
| Camouflage | Disguises itself as the stockroom wall. | Shoot or hit it; you get jumpscared but lose no health. |
Blood Moon nights
A Blood Moon guarantees entities spawn once the shift ends, so stepping outside will trigger one of these events. Each entity follows a strict rule you must obey to survive, and the instruction appears on screen when it spawns. Before clocking in, read any notes left on the counter and check your emails for new entity entries so you know what threats the night holds.
Surviving the siege after a missed doppelganger
If a fake slips past you, it returns while you are locking up. From that moment, the store becomes a fortress you have seconds to build.
E key, and place traps at each entrance.

Whether the bar drains because you hid or fought back, the entity eventually retreats and tries again on a later night. Every doppelganger you let loose makes it return stronger and harder to kill, which is the clearest reason to settle every doubt at the counter while the customer is still standing in front of you.
