Shift At Midnight: What Sparing Norbert Does to Your Shift

Let the gnome pay and leave on his first visit, and he stops bothering you for the rest of the night.

Let the gnome pay and leave on his first visit, and he stops bothering you for the rest of the night.

Norbert is the little gnome who strolls up to your counter in Shift At Midnight looking like a magician crossed with a lawn ornament. His scanned ID reads as fake, the game tags him as a Doppelganger, and his odd chatter makes shooting him on sight feel like the safe call. It is not. The single decision to spare or kill him splits your night into two very different runs.

Quick answer: Do not shoot Norbert the first time he appears. Complete his transaction, take his money, and let him walk out the front doors. He leaves for the rest of the night and does not return in any hostile form.

What sparing Norbert does

Letting him go is the quiet route. Ring up whatever he wants to buy, and he even pays you before he leaves. Once his short interaction at the register wraps up, he turns around, exits, and vanishes for the remainder of the shift. He does not turn into a monster, and he does not come back later to hunt you.

That leaves you free to focus on the things that actually matter for your night. You can restock shelves, clear the checkout, manage the store, and deal with real threats without a returning nuisance interrupting you. Despite the fake ID and the Doppelganger label, sparing him removes him from the storyline for good on that run.

What killing Norbert triggers

Shooting him on his first visit is where the trouble starts. Death is only a temporary setback for Norbert. Kill him once and he keeps coming back through the shift in strange, disruptive ways, pulling pranks meant to disorient you rather than deliver a straight jump scare.

The good news is that his return has no major game-changing consequences. He is chaos, not a lethal boss. Once he starts reappearing, you can simply shoot each form he takes and move on. If you want the calmer night, the fix is to never pull the trigger on him in the first place.

Every form Norbert returns in after you kill him

After his first death, Norbert cycles back in a few recognizable disguises. Each one is his version of revenge, and each has a clear response.

Return formWhat it doesWhat to do
Poisoned lemonade standOffers a drink that lowers your health and causes a visual change if you drink it. It does not kill you.Do not hold the drink prompt. Skip the lemonade.
Motorcycle drive-byRides up to the store on a tiny bike to cause chaos at the windows.Shoot him before he does what he wants.
Disguised as a girlAppears in the shape of a girl to blend in with normal customers.Use the scanner on the body to reveal the gnome inside, then shoot.

Note: The disguised-girl form is the trickiest to catch. Running the scanner exposes Norbert hiding inside, which is the reliable way to confirm it is him before you act.

Why the fake ID does not mean you should kill him

The first time you scan Norbert, his ID reads as fake and flags that he is not what he pretends to be. That reading pushes a lot of players to eliminate him right away, treating him like any other suspicious customer. He is a mysterious creature, and the label is accurate, but he does not behave like a lethal Doppelganger.

Sparing him will not make him return in monster form or in any shape that tries to kill you. So the fake ID is a red herring for this specific customer. Save your ammunition and your killing instinct for a genuine danger like the Marionette instead.

How to know you made the right call

You will know sparing him worked when he finishes his purchase, walks out the front doors, and never appears again for the rest of that shift. No lemonade stand, no motorcycle, no disguise. If instead you start seeing him rev past the windows or set up outside, that is the sign an earlier kill locked you into the recurring-pranks version of the night.

The choice comes down to how much chaos you want. Kill Norbert and you sign up for a running series of harmless but annoying comebacks you have to keep shooting down. Let him pay and leave, and the rest of your gas station shift stays as calm as Shift At Midnight ever gets.
