Shuten Doji Boss Guide in Onimusha: Way of the Sword (Gourd Drainer)

Break his gourd heal, dodge instead of parrying, and turn phase two's Ultimate Mode into free counters.

Break his gourd heal, dodge instead of parrying, and turn phase two’s Ultimate Mode into free counters.

Shuten Doji, the Gourd Drainer, is the giant Genma holding the fortress atop Mount Oe, and he is the rare boss in Onimusha: Way of the Sword who can undo your progress in real time. He drinks from his gourd mid-fight, restores health, and gets stronger the more he swallows. Everything about beating him comes down to denying that drink and picking the right defensive option against a body far larger than yours.

Quick answer: Interrupt every gourd drink with a burst of heavy damage or a bow shot to the gourd, dodge his attacks instead of parrying them, and in phase two use Ultimate Mode to counter his moves for the openings that finish him.

The gourd heal is the fight’s real timer

His health bar reads 84,589, so this is already a long encounter without giving any of it back. When Shuten Doji raises the gourd, he restores health, and repeated successful drinks also raise his overall strength for the rest of the fight. Ignore two or three of them and you are fighting a bigger health pool and a harder boss at the same time.

Treat the drink animation as a hard priority. Whatever you were doing — mid-combo, repositioning, absorbing souls — stop and go for the interrupt.

How to interrupt Shuten Doji’s drink

Watch for the wind-up on the gourd. He telegraphs it clearly because of his size, and you get a window before the healing actually lands.
If you are already in melee range, dump heavy damage into him immediately. A committed burst is enough to knock him out of the animation, so this is the moment to spend a strong attack rather than trade chip damage.
If you are out of range or recovering from a dodge, draw the bow and shoot the gourd itself. The ranged option is the reliable one when closing the distance would leave you inside a swing, and it costs you nothing positionally.
Punish the recovery. A broken drink leaves him exposed, so use that window for free damage before backing off to neutral range.

You know the interrupt landed when the drinking animation cuts short and the health bar stops climbing. If the bar keeps filling, the damage was too light — the fix is committing harder next time, not attacking sooner.

Dodge his attacks instead of parrying them

Parrying is the backbone of most fights in the game, and it is the wrong instinct here. The bulk of Shuten Doji’s moveset is genuinely difficult to parry cleanly, and a failed attempt against a boss this size is a large chunk of health rather than a small mistake. Dodging is the safer default for the whole encounter.

Keep enough distance to actually see his wind-ups. Standing directly underneath him hides the tells you need, and his lines — “You’ll pair well with my wine, Onimusha!” or “There’s no escape!” — arrive with attacks that cover a lot of ground.

Phase two: Use Ultimate Mode to counter

The second phase is where the fight flips in your favor. It triggers your Ultimate Mode, and countering his attacks while you are transformed produces the openings that end the encounter. This is the one part of the fight where you should be answering his swings directly rather than rolling away from them.

Do not burn the state on neutral movement. Stay close enough to answer an attack the moment it starts, chain counters into damage, and the second bar disappears far faster than the first one did.

Why the fight stalls out

  • Chip damage during the drink. Light pokes will not stop him. The interrupt needs a real burst or a bow shot on the gourd.
  • Reflexively parrying. Most of his attacks punish the attempt. Dodge as your default and save counters for phase two.
  • Sitting under him. At point-blank range you cannot read the wind-ups, which means missed dodges and missed interrupts.
  • Holding Ultimate Mode too long. Phase two is short if you spend it countering; it drags if you spend it repositioning.

Handled this way, Shuten Doji is less a damage race than a discipline check. Deny the gourd, stay mobile, and let phase two do the heavy lifting, and the Mount Oe fortress fight ends with “This… cannot be…!” instead of another attempt.
