The Flashlight in Silent Hill: Townfall is the item that turns Zoe’s House from a series of dark shapes into a room you can actually search. It arrives in two pieces, and plenty of players walk out with only one of them. The housing sits downstairs, the power source sits upstairs, and neither does anything until you put them together in the inventory.

Quick answer: Take the Flashlight (No Batteries) from the kitchen drawer beside the washing machine, grab the AA Batteries from the upstairs bedroom nightstand, then combine the two in your inventory.

Both halves live inside the same building, a couple of rooms apart.

The flashlight’s description reads “A small pocket flashlight – requires batteries,” which is the game telling you not to bother trying to equip it yet. The batteries come as a pair, listed as two AA batteries used to power devices.

Getting to Zoe’s House after the Otherworld

Once you escape the Otherworld and land back in the town square, open the map of St. Amelia’s Shorefront. Zoe’s House is the building opposite the “2” marker, west of the square, reached through the alleyway and rear courtyard. Climb the outdoor metal stairway and let yourself into apartment 2A — the front door is already unlocked.

Collect the Flashlight (No Batteries) in the kitchen

Follow the hallway from the front door into the kitchen on the ground floor. You’ll pass the locked organ transport cooler sitting on the table — leave it for now.

Go to the run of counter drawers next to the washing machine and open them. One holds the Flashlight (No Batteries).

Take the item and check it in the inventory if you like. It sits there inert until you find a power source, so head for the stairs.

Find the AA Batteries in the upstairs bedroom

Take the staircase to the second-floor landing. There’s a framed Photo of Simon on the landing table worth examining on the way past, since Simon reacts to it.
Enter the bedroom on the left and look at the small nightstand against the back wall. Open its wooden drawer to take the AA Batteries.

This is the step most players skip. Only the flashlight body is in the kitchen, so if the light won’t turn on, it’s almost always because the bedroom drawer is still shut.

How to combine the batteries and the flashlight

Go into the inventory, then select the Key Items tab. The first time you have two matching parts, a Combining Items prompt usually appears.
Highlight the AA Batteries and press X/A on a controller, or the Space button on keyboard, then pick Combine.
Choose the Flashlight (No Batteries) as the second item. The two merge into a working Flashlight that moves to your Equipment as a wearable light.

Press R3 to toggle the beam. You’ll know the combine worked when the item is listed under Equipment as “Flashlight” and the light actually switches on and off in the world.

How the Flashlight works for the rest of the game

  • It is a permanent item. There are no spare batteries to hunt down later.
  • On most difficulty settings, enemies cannot see the beam, so you can leave it on while exploring.
  • On Nightmare difficulty, turning it on may give nearby enemies your location.
  • The beam exposes collectibles and puzzle notes that are invisible in unlit rooms.

Put it to work before leaving the apartment. Sweeping the storage closet under the staircase turns up the CEG Electricard Credit Guide sitting on a cardboard box next to the dead meter cabinet, and the upstairs bathroom has an Organ Transplant Card lying on the floor by the shower. Both feed directly into restoring the power and opening the cooler in the kitchen, so the dark rooms you just lit are the ones the rest of the chapter runs through.
