Rebirth is the only permanent progression system in TBOD^2 (Tycoon But One Dropper: SQUARED). Every run you build with a single dropper eventually stalls, and the reset at the Obelisk trades that run for Essence, which quietly makes every future run faster. The speed of your rebirth cycle comes down to three things: hitting the cash requirement, timing the reset before you waste time waiting on a purchase you cannot afford, and stacking boosts that carry across the reset.
Quick answer: Upgrade your dropper and income upgraders until your cash meets the Obelisk requirement (10M on an early rebirth), walk to the Obelisk, use the REBIRTH option, and confirm. Your cash and tycoon reset, and you keep the Essence, which grants a permanent 0.4% cash boost per point.

The reset is not a punishment, and it is not optional if you want to move up the leaderboards. Knowing exactly what survives the wipe makes the decision to press it much easier.
| What it is | What happens at rebirth |
|---|---|
| Cash on hand | Reset to zero |
| Tycoon build and upgraders | Reset — everything must be rebought |
| Essence | Kept and increased by the reset |
| Essence cash boost | Permanent and stacking |
| Gamepasses and purchased boosters | Kept, still active after the reset |
| Rebirth count and rank | Permanent, tracked on the leaderboards |
There is no stated cap on rebirths. Players have pushed well past 100, and the Rebirth Rewards track runs through tiers marked I, II, III, IV and V, so the cycle is designed to be repeated rather than finished once.
Essence and Bits: The two cash boosts that shorten runs
Both systems increase the money your single dropper generates, but they come from opposite ends of the game and behave differently. Essence is your long game. Bits are the lever you pull inside the current run.
| Boost | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Essence | 0.4% cash boost each, stacking permanently | Rebirthing at the Obelisk |
| Bits | 10% cash boost each | Merchant cards |
Because a single Bit is worth roughly 25 Essence in raw percentage, it is worth finding the Merchant before you commit to a long grind toward the threshold. The efficient loop is to stack Bits to speed up the current run, reach the Obelisk sooner, bank the Essence, then rebuild on a larger permanent multiplier.

When to rebirth instead of pushing the run further
The signal to reset is time, not cash. Once you have bought everything you can comfortably afford and the next meaningful upgrade costs far more than your income can cover in a reasonable stretch, the run has stopped paying you. At that point, rebuilding from zero on a stronger multiplier is almost always faster than waiting.

Reset when the cash requirement is met and your progression has visibly slowed. Hold off if you are only a short stretch away from a major income upgrader, since buying it first raises the ceiling for every remaining minute of the run. The mistake that costs the most time is resetting at random, early in a fresh run, before your income has built any momentum.
Which upgrades to buy before you reset
Spend on the things that raise the value of what the dropper produces, and treat everything else as optional. Compare the price of an upgrade against how much it lifts your income before buying, especially once costs move into six figures, and be willing to sit on cash briefly when a much stronger purchase is close.
| Upgrade | Cost |
|---|---|
| Battery Pack | $500 |
| Cut Emissions | $7K |
| Diamond Quality | $10K |
| Advanced Sanding | $25K |
| 2nd Conveyor | $50K |
| Reverse Osmosis | $75K |
| Overdrive | $100K |
| Efficient Blenders | $100K |
| Polisher Squared | $50K / $200K / $500K |
| Stronger Battery | $200K / $500K |
Note: holding a large balance with no target slows you down. Cash sitting idle earns nothing, so keep it cycling into upgraders unless you are deliberately saving for a specific tier.
Confirming the rebirth worked
The reset is obvious the moment it lands. Your cash drops to zero, the tycoon returns to its starting state, and your rebirth rank increments — the Obelisk panel shows the change, such as 0 –> I, and the Rebirths and Rebirth Rank leaderboards update to match.
If the option is unavailable, the cause is almost always the same: your balance has not reached the requirement yet. The Obelisk fraction will still be short of its target, and no amount of interacting will trigger the prompt until it fills. Keep upgrading income until the counter completes.
The cycle rewards repetition more than patience. Build income, collect Bits from the Merchant, hit the threshold, reset at the Obelisk, and rebuild on a slightly larger permanent boost each time. Runs that felt long at rebirth I compress noticeably by the time you have stacked several ranks of Essence, and that compression is the whole point of the system. If frame drops are making the run harder to manage on a busy server, a free private server smooths out the input timing without changing anything about your progress in TBOD 2.
