Armored enemies in Tears of Metal shrug off your normal light and heavy swings, which makes them one of the sharpest early spikes in difficulty. Their shields sit on top of their health, and ordinary attacks barely touch that layer. Push past it the wrong way and a single shielded captain can wipe your run.
Quick answer: Attack shielded enemies with an armor-breaking combo instead of standard hits. With Wallace, press Space, then tap the left mouse button twice to perform Block Thrusts and strip the shield.
How to identify armored enemies
Shielded enemies look different from regular fodder, and the clearest tell is the health bar. A grey bar sits above the usual red one. That grey portion is the shield, and the red underneath is the actual health you need to reach.
Elite enemies raise the stakes with two or three stacked grey bars, meaning more shield to chew through before their health is exposed. Until every grey bar is gone, your standard damage stays blunted.

You start running into these enemies during Act 1, but they show up far more often once you reach Act 2. Learning to read the grey bar early pays off before the shielded elites become common.

Add to Google Preferences →Break the shield with armor-breaking combos
The rule is simple. To take down a shield, you need weapons and heroes that have armor-breaking combos, not just raw attack spam. The good news is that even beginner characters and starting weapons come with at least one of these moves, so you are never locked out of the fight.
Block Thrusts is not the only option. Other heroes and weapons carry their own shield-breaking combos, so a build that struggles against armor with one weapon may handle it easily with another.
Pick the combo that does the most damage
Not every armor-breaking move hits equally hard. Shield-breaking combos deal different amounts of damage, so when you have more than one available, lean on the one that strips the shield fastest. Against elites with two or three grey bars, that difference decides whether you break through before their attacks catch you.
You know it worked when the grey bars disappear and the enemy’s red health bar is fully exposed. At that point normal attacks land properly again, and heavy-hitting hackers like Ruadh Stonecrusher, who excels at shield breaking, make quick work of the rest.
Treat armored enemies as a targeting problem rather than a DPS race. Read the grey bar, open with an armor-breaking combo, then swap to your standard swings once the shield falls, and even the toughest shielded elites in the Scottish Highlands stop being a wall.
