Legendary Mode is the hardest world difficulty in Terraria, and it is the one setting you cannot pick from the difficulty buttons during world creation. It only exists when two specific world options line up, and once the world is generated, the setting is locked for good.

Quick answer: Create a Master Mode world and type for the worthy (or everything) as the seed. The world’s difficulty text turns lime green in the world selection menu when it worked.

How to create a Legendary Mode world in Terraria 1.4.5.8

Start a new world and set the difficulty to Master. Legendary is built on top of Master Mode, so Classic and Expert worlds cannot become Legendary no matter which seed you use.
In the seed field, enter for the worthy. The everything seed also produces Legendary Mode when paired with Master, since it includes the for the worthy ruleset alongside the other secret world effects.
Generate the world, then back out to the world selection menu and look at the difficulty label under the world name. Legendary worlds are shown in lime green, and unlike the other difficulties they carry no description text, because there is no world creation entry to pull a description from.

World difficulty is fixed at generation. There is no way to convert an existing Master world into a Legendary one after the fact.

Legendary Mode stat changes compared to Classic and Master

Legendary stacks everything from Expert Mode, everything from Master Mode, and the for the worthy seed’s own rules. The result is the steepest multiplier set in the game, with enemy contact damage scaling harder than anything else.

StatClassicMasterLegendary
Enemy health
Enemy contact damage5.33×
Enemy projectile damage
Enemy coin drops2.5×3.5×
Knockback taken by enemies0.8×0.8×
Debuff duration2.5×2.5×
Boulder damage140420420
Lightning damage80240400
Player defense effectiveness50%100%100%
Default accessory slots566

Two numbers there decide how the run feels. Contact damage at 5.33× means a single touch from a basic enemy can end a pre-Hardmode character, and lightning damage of 400 makes surface thunderstorms lethal on their own — walking across open ground during a storm is a real cause of death, not a freak accident.

The upside is defense. Player defense works at full effectiveness, the same as Master, so armor and Warding accessories pull their full weight. Enemy coin drops are also the highest in the game at 3.5×, which pays for reforging.

What Legendary Mode adds on its own

Nothing. Legendary Mode has no exclusive items, drops, or mechanics of its own. Every change you see comes from Master Mode, Expert Mode, or the for the worthy seed layered together, which is why the game treats it as a label rather than a selectable option.

You still get the Master Mode rewards. Treasure Bags still drop from bosses, Master-exclusive drops still appear, and the seventh accessory slot is still available through a Demon Heart. Bosses also carry their harder Master profiles — the Brain of Cthulhu, for example, arrives with boosted stats, a larger Creeper count, and more aggressive behavior than it has on lower difficulties.

Platform and version availability

Legendary Mode was introduced in the 1.4.4 update and is available on the Desktop, Console, Mobile, and tModLoader versions. It is not present on the old-gen console or 3DS builds, which never received 1.4.4.

The current build is 1.4.5.8 on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Nintendo Switch, with Android and Xbox One / PlayStation 4 sitting on point releases built on the same version.

Surviving pre-Hardmode bosses in Legendary Mode

With contact damage this high, preparation matters more than reflexes. The fights that go badly are usually the ones where the arena was still half-built or the buffs had expired.

Build the arena before you summon

Dig out a space far larger than you think you need, then fill it with rows of wooden or Rich Mahogany platforms so you can move vertically without touching anything. Campfires, heart lanterns, and sunflowers cover regeneration and spawn suppression at once.

Background walls are the part people skip. Placing walls across the arena floor blocks native enemies — Hoplites in a Jungle arena, for instance — from spawning mid-fight and adding a second damage source you did not plan for.

Stack buffs and reforge for defense

Brew Endurance, Ironskin, Swiftness, and a damage potion matched to your class before every attempt, and re-brew after a death rather than running back in with a partial stack. Ingredients come from an underground herb farm and from fishing, with Armored Cavefish and Stinkfish feeding Endurance and Wrath potions.

Then spend coins at the Goblin Tinkerer. Warding on accessories is the default choice at this difficulty, since defense is fully effective, while weapons want Mythical or Masterful depending on class. Magic Cuffs and a Mana Flower cover mana sustain for a mage run.

Use merchants, NPC housing, and fishing to fund the run

The Traveling Merchant rotates through genuinely useful stock — the Extendo Grip, Red Cape, and Zapinator among them — so check the shop every time he appears rather than waiting for a specific item.

The Skeleton Merchant is the other one worth hunting for, since he turns up in the cavern layer with counterweights, roller skates, and other stock you cannot buy in town.

Housing placement pays off too. Pairing the Arms Dealer and the Nurse in a Snow biome cabin keeps both happy, which lowers their prices and unlocks a pylon for fast travel between arenas.

Finally, build the Angler a house at the ocean and turn in quests regularly. The rewards cover consumables and utility items you would otherwise grind for, including the Fuzzy Carrot mount.

None of this changes the multipliers, but it changes how many attempts you can afford. Legendary Mode rewards players who treat every boss as a setup problem first and a combat problem second.
