Swordmastery is the only skill tree in The Blood of Dawnwalker that works in both of Coen’s forms, day and night, which makes its manuals the most valuable books in the game. Every ability upgrade past the starting rank needs a manual, and there is no single fixed collectible list to hunt down. Copies are scattered across camp chests, quest rewards, and merchant stock, and there are far more of them in the world than you need.
Quick answer: Buy the ability manuals you are missing from the four Swordmastery teachers (Ursul, Constantin, Catalin’s Tutor, and Ocha) plus Dragos in Svartrau City, and loot Soldier Camp and Bandit Camp chests for random duplicates. Visit Dragos before the late-game quest “Rise at Dawn” starts, because his shop closes permanently at that point.
How Swordmastery manuals work
A manual is a consumable book, not the skill itself. Picking one up puts it in your inventory, and you still have to read it before the matching entry in the Swordmastery tree becomes available. After that, you learn or upgrade the ability at a Shrine by spending Skill Points and, for most entries, time segments from your 30-day clock.
Skill Points are shared across all three trees, so a manual you cannot afford to use yet is not wasted — the book stays in your inventory until you come back. Vampirism is the exception to the whole system: those skills have no manuals at all and level up through Corruption gained by feeding.

Seven Swordmastery entries are active abilities, and each one has multiple acquisition routes. Merchant stock is partly randomized between playthroughs, so if a teacher is missing a book you expected, check a different one or come back later.
| Ability | World and quest routes | Merchants |
|---|---|---|
| Charge | Rank 1 comes from the prologue quest “Like Father, Like Son”; another copy sits in the Soldier Camp chest east of Parlita in Boar’s Back | Ocha, Dragos |
| Broad Swing | Bandit Camp chest on the hillside east of Laslea, near the Outlaw’s Gorge shrine | Constantin, Catalin’s Tutor, Ocha, Dragos |
| Swiftness | Bandit Camp chest in the forest of Briar Sloughs, northwest of Stoneward Post | Constantin, Ocha, Dragos |
| Dirty Trick | Rank 1 is unlocked by default; no fixed world location for the upgrades | Ocha, Dragos |
| Adrenaline Rush | Random drops from camps and defeated enemies | Constantin, Ursul, Ocha, Dragos |
| Artery Strike | Soldier Camp chest in St. Tyna’s Grove north of Ambrus’s fort, on the road toward the convent; also from the “Buried Past” quest in Mageri | Catalin’s Tutor (x2), Constantin, Ocha, Dragos |
| Walking Fortress | Random drops from camps and defeated enemies | Ursul (x3), Ocha (x2), Catalin’s Tutor, Constantin, Dragos |
Charge is the one book with a deadline attached. The prologue training with Pieter costs a single time segment and has to be finished before “Sacred Covenant” advances the story, and after the session you should pick the farewell dialogue rather than agreeing to wait, which jumps you straight to the Blood Mass. Missing it is not fatal, since the Parlita camp chest and both city-adjacent vendors stock the same book.

Charge itself sits near the top of the Swordmastery tree, and its later ranks are where most of the merchant copies go. Rank 4 in particular is sold by both Ocha and Dragos, so a single shopping trip through Svartrau can finish the line.

Dirty Trick is the cheapest ability to get value out of, because rank 1 is free from the start and the stun it applies lasts either the full duration or until you land three hits. Ranks 2 and 3 are pure vendor pickups.

Unlocking the four Swordmastery teachers
Teachers are marked with a white “word” icon on the map, but none of them appear until you do something specific for them first. Three of the four end in a duel you have to win.

Dragos in Svartrau City and the “Rise at Dawn” cutoff
Dragos is not a formal Swordmastery teacher, but he trades in the Silberstein district of Svartrau City and carries a copy of almost every ability manual in the game, plus passives like Master Fencer, Perfect Riposte, and Precision. He becomes available through the Manumit questline, which runs from “Where Loyalty Lies” through “What Moves the Dead”.
Note: his shop shuts for good once the late-game quest “Rise at Dawn” is active. If Dragos is your planned source for a specific book, buy it before you trigger that quest, because nothing reopens him afterward.
Farming missing manuals from Soldier and Bandit Camps
When a specific book refuses to show up in any shop, the reliable fallback is clearing camps. Soldier Camps and Bandit Camps both hold a main chest that can roll a Swordmastery manual, and defeated enemies drop them as loot too. There is no cap on how many you can collect, and the world contains more than the total needed to max every ability.
Open the world map, filter for camp markers, and work through them in a loop — Shapeshift from the Vampirism tree or Mercurial Fervour from Witchcraft cuts the travel time down considerably. Kobold Nests, Scouting Towers, and Ancient Circles also drop books, but those lean toward Witchcraft.

Other merchants that stock Swordmastery books
Regular town vendors mostly sell the passive side of the tree rather than the seven active abilities, which is useful when you want armor penalties reduced or extra activation charges without hunting camps.
| Merchant | Location and notable stock |
|---|---|
| Tantari Armourer and Blacksmith | Near Tantari Shrine in St. Tyna’s Grove — Second Skin I and II, Growing Momentum, Sharp Eye |
| Maragir Armourer | North of Maragir Crossroads Shrine — Pack Mule, Second Skin I |
| Altenmarkt Armourer and Henrik | Svartrau City, Altenmarkt — Omniblock, Stinging Blade, Fleet of Foot, Vigour, Endless Effort |
| Cathedral Complex Blacksmith | Svartrau City — Fate’s Favour, Precision, Counterattack |
| Anca | Crossroad Inn, after “Echoes of Silenced Bells” — Fleet of Foot |
| Parlita Blacksmith | Parlita, Boar’s Back — Growing Momentum |
Confirming the ability actually unlocked
Three separate checks decide whether an ability is usable, and it is easy to stall on one of them without noticing. First, the manual has to be in your inventory. Second, it has to be read. Third, you have to be standing at a Shrine and pay the Skill Point and time cost shown on the upgrade.
If the tree entry is still greyed out, run through those in order. An unread book, a full Skill Point wallet with no Shrine nearby, and a purchased manual for a rank you have already learned are the three things that account for nearly every case. Once the upgrade goes through, the ability’s rank number changes on the Swordmastery tree and the hourglass cost is deducted from your remaining days.
Because each training session burns story time, it is worth deciding early which abilities you actually want at maximum rank rather than levelling everything you find. Artery Strike at rank 3 or 4, a single point in Dirty Trick, and either Adrenaline Rush or Walking Fortress at rank 3 cover most fights on their own, leaving the spare books for later in the run.
