The Coat of Darkened Scales is one of the legendary chestpieces Coen can wear in The Blood of Dawnwalker, and it is easy to walk right past. There is no boss guarding it and no long questline attached. It sits underground at Rockfalls, and the only thing standing between you and it is a scrap of paper stashed in a bandit camp.

Quick answer: Steal the Treasure Map: Split Rock from the hay bales at the small bandit camp south of Rockfalls, then follow the marker to the snowy search area and dig the glowing mound between two large rocks. The buried chest contains the Coat of Darkened Scales.

What the Coat of Darkened Scales is

It is a legendary heavy chestpiece, which puts it in the same slot as Ambrus’s Cuirass, Isbrand’s Plate and the Enhanced Armour of the Arbiter. You only need one legendary item per slot, so grabbing this one closes out your chest slot without fighting a vampire boyar or committing to a long court questline.

That matters if you are chasing Gear of the Gods, the trophy and achievement that unlocks when every equipment slot is filled with legendary gear. The Coat of Darkened Scales is one of the cheapest ways to tick the chest slot off that list.

Two ways to get the Coat of Darkened Scales

The armour turns up in two different places depending on how you play. One is a small treasure-hunt activity you can do at any point once you are in the area. The other is tied to a Sanzhana side quest, so it depends on your questing order.

RouteWhere it isWhat you need first
Buried treasure chestRockfalls, between two large rocks in the snowy search areaTreasure Map: Split Rock, stolen from a bandit camp south of Rockfalls
Tiny Dancer questChest on the upper floor of the house, at the end of the roomSanzhana’s Tiny Dancer quest active

Note: legendary chest armour is normally a one-time pickup, so once you have the coat from either route, you have it.

Steal the Treasure Map: Split Rock from the bandit camp

Open your map and head for the Sallis Sarcora region, just south of Rockfalls. You are looking for a small campsite with a lit campfire rather than a fortified camp, so it is easy to miss from the road.

Walk up to the stack of hay bales beside the fire and interact with it. The map is treated as stolen goods, so you will get the steal prompt rather than a plain loot prompt.
Select Treasure Map: Split Rock from the steal menu. Taking it immediately starts the activity Bandit’s Treasure Map: Rockfalls – Split Rock and drops a search area onto your map.

If nothing appears on the map afterwards, open your journal and check that the treasure map entry is there. The quest is what places the search zone, so without it you will be digging blind.

Dig up the chest at Rockfalls

Track the treasure map activity and travel north into Rockfalls. The objective reads “Search for the treasure” and points you at a rocky stretch near a cave entrance rather than a single pin.

Climb into the snowy section of the search zone and look for the split formation the map is named after. The dig spot sits in the gap between two large rocks and shows up as a yellow glow on the ground.

Interact with the glowing mound to dig. Coen unearths a wooden chest, and opening it completes the treasure map activity.
Loot the chest and take the Coat of Darkened Scales. You can equip it straight from the loot window or from the chest slot in your inventory.

Alternate location: Tiny Dancer quest chest

The other place the coat shows up is Sanzhana’s Tiny Dancer side quest. Once you are inside the house the quest sends you to, take the stairs to the upper floor and check the chest at the far end of the room before you leave.

Like a lot of quest-gated loot in the game, that room is not somewhere you can wander into at will, so clear the chest while you are there rather than planning to come back. If you already dug up the coat at Rockfalls, you can skip the detour entirely.

How to confirm you got it

Two things tell you it worked. The Bandit’s Treasure Map: Rockfalls – Split Rock entry closes out in your journal the moment you open the buried chest, and the Coat of Darkened Scales appears in your inventory under chest armour with legendary rarity.

If the dig prompt never appears, the usual cause is that you are in the right general area but not standing on the mound itself. The marker covers a wide zone, and the actual spot only lights up when you are close to the two rocks. The other common miss is grabbing everything from the hay bales except the map, since the steal menu can hold several items at once.

Once the coat is equipped and the chest slot is settled, the remaining legendary pieces are spread across trousers, boots, bracers, a sword and accessories, and those are the slots that will decide whether Gear of the Gods pops before your 30 days run out.
