Every objective, catalyst location, and reward for the day-only side quest in Tantari Woods.

Don’t Kill the Messenger is one of the quieter side quests in The Blood of Dawnwalker, and it is easy to walk straight past. There is no quest giver and no marker waiting for you. It begins with a handful of arrows stuck in the dirt on a road in Tantari Woods, and it ends with Coen pulling a confession out of a dead man.

Quick answer: During the day, follow the blood and arrows on the road south of the Shepherd’s Rest Shrine, kill the uriashi soldier standing over the body, pick up the Severed Uriashi Horn, the Arrow, the Dead Man’s Sword and the Well-Maintained Scabbard, then use the Compel Soul witchcraft ability on the corpse and offer those items as catalysts.

Don’t Kill the Messenger start location in Tantari Woods

Open the world map and travel to Tantari Woods. The trigger sits on the road directly south of the Shepherd’s Rest Shrine, where a few arrows are buried in the ground next to a splash of blood. Walking up to them starts the quest with the objective “Follow the trail,” which leads southwest off the road.

Timing matters more than position here. The interrogation step is locked to daytime because Coen’s runic scars seal over at night, which shuts off his witchcraft. If you arrive after dark you can still find the body and clear the fight, but you cannot finish the quest until the sun is up.

Quest requirements, time cost, and rewards

DetailValue
RegionTantari Woods
Quest giverNone — triggered by the trail on the road
RequirementsNone, beyond the Compel Soul witchcraft ability
Time cost2 time segments
Time of dayDay only
Objectives7 total, none optional
MissableYes — it has a failure ending
Reward100 XP and 1 skill point

Two time segments is a small bill against the 30-day clock, but it is not free. Time in The Blood of Dawnwalker only moves when you complete activities, so the cost lands the moment you wrap up the interrogation rather than while you wander around the woods looking for pickups.

Catalyst locations for Compel Soul

Compel Soul does not work on its own. The ability needs physical objects tied to the dead man’s last moments, and each one you present unlocks another piece of his story. All of them sit along the trail or within a few steps of the corpse.

ItemWhere to find it
Severed Uriashi HornOn the right side of the trail, near the rock wall splashed with yellow blood
ArrowOn the ground beside the body
Dead Man’s SwordLying next to the corpse
Well-Maintained ScabbardRecovered while inspecting the area around the body

Tip: sweep the whole area in Focus Mode before you open the ability wheel. Anything interactable glows, and the horn in particular is easy to miss because it sits back on the trail rather than at the body.

Full walkthrough: from the blood trail to the interrogation

Head south from the Shepherd’s Rest Shrine and stop at the arrows planted in the road. Inspecting the blood here opens the quest and points you southwest into the trees.
Follow the trail to the wrecked camp by the roadside and switch to Focus Mode. The campfire, the abandoned bag and the shredded tent all read as separate clues, and working through them clears the “Investigate the area” objective.

Track the oversized footprints leading out of the camp and deeper into the forest. Keep Focus Mode on so the prints stay visible between the roots and undergrowth.

Grab the Severed Uriashi Horn from the right-hand side of the trail, where the rock wall is streaked with yellow blood. This is the catalyst that ties the killer to the scene, and it is the easiest one to leave behind.
Push on until you find the uriashi soldier standing over a human body and beat him. He attacks on sight, so there is no way to avoid the fight and still see the quest through.
With the soldier down, inspect the area around the corpse in Focus Mode. Pick up the Arrow on the ground, the Dead Man’s Sword resting beside him, and the Well-Maintained Scabbard.

Use Compel Soul on the body and feed it the catalysts you collected. The scout’s spirit walks through his final moments and names Catalin as the person who sent him, which closes the quest.

How to confirm the quest completed

The interrogation ends with a reward pop-up for 100 XP and 1 skill point, and the entry moves out of your active journal list. Coen’s own summary records that the dead man was carrying a coded message to the manumits, that an uriash soldier killed him, and that the missive at least never reached the vrakhiri.

There is a second outcome, and it is a blank. If you never get the interrogation off, the journal closes the thread with Coen admitting he never learned what happened, and the XP and skill point do not land. Because the whole quest is missable, the 30-day deadline can also take it off the board entirely if you leave it too long.

Why Compel Soul does not trigger

  • It is night. Compel Soul is a witchcraft ability, and Coen loses access to spells after sunset, so the objective carries a sun icon.
  • You are missing catalysts. The ability needs the objects from the scene to open the dialogue, and the Severed Uriashi Horn is the one most players walk past.
  • The uriashi soldier is still alive. The body stays out of reach until the fight is over.
  • You skipped Focus Mode at the body. The Arrow, the Dead Man’s Sword and the scabbard are all flagged as Focus Mode finds rather than obvious loot piles.

Two time segments for a skill point is a decent trade, and the Compel Soul sequence here is a clean tutorial for how the ability works elsewhere in Vale Sangora. Collect the catalysts before you cast, keep it in daylight, and the messenger’s last errand gets told in full.
