Every objective, the three Compel Soul catalysts, the rewards, and the two ways the investigation can end.

Don’t Kill the Messenger is a small roadside investigation in Tantari Woods that starts on its own — no quest giver, no prerequisites. You spot arrows stuck in the ground, follow the blood, and end up questioning a dead man about a message he never delivered. The whole thing costs two time segments off the 30-day clock, and the payoff only lands if you handle the corpse correctly.

Quick answer: Follow the trail south of Shepherd’s Rest Shrine, pick up the Severed Uriashi Horn on the way, kill the uriashi soldier standing over the body, then grab the Arrow and the Well-Maintained Scabbard near the corpse and use Compel Soul on the dead man with all three items as catalysts during the day.

Where the trail starts in Tantari Woods

Head directly south of the Shepherd’s Rest Shrine and walk the road. A cluster of arrows planted in the dirt and a smear of blood marks the spot where the quest hooks in — someone was shot at here, and the trail runs southwest into the trees. There is nothing to interact with beyond walking up to it; the journal entry appears on its own.

A short way along the trail you reach a wrecked camp by the roadside. Focus Mode lights up the debris here — footprints, a cooking pot, a sack, and a blanket. Sweeping all of it closes out the “Investigate the area using Focus Mode” objective and points the footprints deeper into the forest.

How to complete Don’t Kill the Messenger

Follow the yellow footprints away from the camp with Focus Mode active. On the right-hand side of the trail, stop and pick up the Severed Uriashi Horn. This is the first of the three catalysts you need later, and it is easy to run straight past.

Keep following the prints until you find an uriashi soldier beating on a body. He turns on you immediately, so treat this as a straight fight — there is no way to talk him down. Kill him to unlock access to the corpse.
Loot the soldier. He carries Noble’s Golden Buskins, which is worth taking even though the quest does not require it.

Turn Focus Mode back on and sweep the ground around the body. There is an Arrow lying loose nearby and a Well-Maintained Scabbard resting beside the corpse. Collect both — the interrogation will not produce the full story without them.
With all three items in your inventory, use the Compel Soul Witchcraft ability on the dead man during daylight hours. The spell pulls his spirit back long enough to answer, and each catalyst you present opens a different line of questioning.

Work through all three catalysts, then loot the scout’s shoe. The hidden item inside is A Note From A Shoe — the coded missive he was carrying — and picking it up ends the quest.

The three Compel Soul catalysts and where to find them

CatalystWhere you pick it up
Severed Uriashi HornOn the right side of the trail between the ruined camp and the fight
ArrowLoose on the ground near the corpse, revealed in Focus Mode
Well-Maintained ScabbardDirectly beside the dead man’s body

Catalysts work as prompts rather than keys. Each one you hold in front of the spirit steers the questioning toward a different part of what happened — the uriash that attacked him, the ambush on the road, and the man himself. Only after all three does he give up where the message was hidden.

How to confirm the quest completed

Completion is easy to verify. The journal entry closes out with Coen’s own summary — that the dead man was carrying a coded message for the manumits, and that although an uriash soldier killed him, the missive never reached the vrakhiri. You should also see 100 XP and a skill point awarded, plus A Note From A Shoe sitting in your inventory.

If the entry instead resolves with “In the end, I never found out what really happened,” the investigation closed without the note. That is the outcome you get when the interrogation is left unfinished.

Why Don’t Kill the Messenger can fail

There are only a few ways to lose this one, and all of them come down to leaving the scene half-finished.

  • Walking away before using all three catalysts on the corpse, which leaves the note’s hiding place unrevealed.
  • Reaching the body only at night, when Compel Soul is unavailable, and never returning in daylight.
  • Letting the story clock run out. The quest is missable, so once started it can be taken off the board by the deadline.

The safest approach is to treat the whole thing as one uninterrupted daylight visit. Unstarted side activities stay available indefinitely, so if you stumble onto the arrows late in the day, it costs nothing to fast travel away and pick up the trail fresh the next morning with two clean time segments to spend.
