The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Beat Ambrus in The Gilded Gauntlet

Ring the bell after dark to summon Ambrus, survive the duel, and collect the trophy, cuirass, and loot.

Ring the bell after dark to summon Ambrus, survive the duel, and collect the trophy, cuirass, and loot.

Ambrus, the Right Fist of the Knyaz, is the boyar at the end of The Gilded Gauntlet, and he does not show up on his own. The quest hands Coen a single instruction and a narrow window, and everything after that — the taunting, the blood offer, the duel — only fires once you pull the rope.

Quick answer: Go to the bell tower in the snowy ruin at night and ring the bell to summon Ambrus. Refuse or accept his drink, win the duel, then pick either “drain Ambrus’s blood” or “kill Ambrus” to end the quest.

How to summon Ambrus with the bell at night

The trigger is the bell, not the location. Standing in the ruin during the day does nothing — the objective explicitly requires nightfall, and the summon lands cleanly at midnight.

Advance time until night, then travel to the snowy ruin holding the bell tower. The quest tracker reads “Show up for the duel with Ambrus,” with the sub-objective “Ring the bell at night to summon Ambrus.”
Climb to the bell and interact with it. The prompt gives you two options, [ring the bell] or [leave], so nothing is committed until you choose the first one.
Let the cutscene play. Ambrus arrives with a company of soldiers, and the encounter moves straight into dialogue with no chance to back out.

Note: The quest also lists “(Optional) Show up for the duel on time” as a separate objective. Arriving late does not lock you out of the fight, but it drops that optional line.

Because the summon only works after dark, the entire encounter happens during the night loop, which is when Coen’s vampiric kit is on the table — claws, Shadowstep traversal, and biting for health regeneration.

Dialogue choices before the Ambrus duel

The conversation runs long and gives Coen several forks, but they steer tone rather than outcome. Ambrus opens by asking why you wrecked his operation, and you can answer with “I saw evil and I dealt with it,” “You’re in my way, I wanted you gone,” or “I was bored.” He then pivots to Lord Skender and needles Coen about life under the old regime, where “Skender was one of us – you’re not” and similar cutting replies are available.

If you want to skip the theatre, options like “Cut the crap” and “Enough of this jibbering” push the scene forward faster. Coen’s line lands as “Enough of this bullshit. I didn’t come here to chat,” and Ambrus obliges.

The blood toast choice

The one moment worth thinking about is the toast. Ambrus offers “a sip of blue blood” and orders his servant Julian forward, then insists you drink first. Your choices include “Gladly. To a juicy slaughter!”, “I don’t drink from humans,” “I don’t trust anything you offer,” and a separate (give in to the hunger) option.

Refusing with “I don’t drink from humans” is what exposes Coen. Ambrus’s reply — that every vrakhir drinks from humans unless they have a very good reason not to — is the moment he clocks what you are, and he accuses Coen of dodging a fair duel. Either way, he stabs Julian, drinks, and draws steel.

The Ambrus, the Right Fist of the Knyaz boss fight

Once the health bar labelled “Ambrus, the Right Fist of the Knyaz” appears, the encounter is a straight duel. His soldiers stay on the sidelines chanting rather than joining in, so there is no add management to worry about.

The fight leans on the systems the game has already taught you. Directional attacks and parries mean you commit to one of four directions per exchange, damage builds activation charges you can spend on Hex magic or an execution, and feeding restores health. Expect a fight of a few minutes rather than a multi-phase marathon.

Drain Ambrus’s blood or kill Ambrus: the finisher choice

Dropping Ambrus’s health triggers a finishing cutscene with two prompts, [drain Ambrus’s blood] and [kill Ambrus]. Coen’s line, “Not so cocky now, are you?”, plays either way.

Draining him executes Ambrus and awards The Right Fist of the Knyaz trophy. Both options end the boyar, so the pick is about how Coen handles his hunger rather than whether the target survives.

Ambrus rewards, loot, and trophy

The kill pays out on two screens. The quest reward panel lands first, then Ambrus’s body can be looted separately before the quest closes.

Loot the body before you walk away. The Note for Ambrus and Song of Valour only come off the corpse, and Ambrus’s Cuirass is armor you would otherwise leave behind in the snow.

How to confirm The Gilded Gauntlet is complete

Three confirmations stack up in a row. You get the QUEST ENDED banner for The Gilded Gauntlet, the level-up notification, and the trophy pop if you drained him.

The lasting change shows in Brencis’s Court. Ambrus is flagged BOYAR ELIMINATED and struck from the list, leaving Brencis, Xanthe, and Bakir standing. If that screen still shows him as active, the duel has not resolved and you have not looted the body yet.

If Ambrus never appears at all, the cause is almost always the same: the bell was rung outside of night, or the interaction was cancelled with [leave]. Return to the tower after dark and ring it again.

Clearing Ambrus is one of the more self-contained confrontations in Vale Sangora — one bell, one duel, one court seat emptied — and it costs you a slice of the thirty days and nights you have to reach your family.
