The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Follow the Windchimes in Bear Trouble

The exact route up the Briar Sloughs mountain, the bear waiting at the top, and the glyph that pays out a Ravenous Flock Manual.

The exact route up the Briar Sloughs mountain, the bear waiting at the top, and the glyph that pays out a Ravenous Flock Manual.

The windchimes are the whole navigation system for A Pilgrimage for Power: Bear Trouble. There is no waypoint trail up the mountain and no map marker past the starting point, so the ringing posts, the cairns wrapped in fabric, and the chalk marks on the rock are the only things telling you where to climb next.

Quick answer: Cross the river northwest of the Briar Sloughs tower, hold Focus Mode to spot the first windchime hanging from a tree, then climb straight up the cliff behind it and keep moving toward each new chime or cairn until the objective flips to “Defeat the bear.”

Where the windchimes start

Bear Trouble unlocks after you finish the prologue quest Smoke and Ashes and scout the Briar Sloughs tower. The starting point sits north of Briar Sloughs and in the southern stretch of Laslea Glen, west of the tower itself, on the far side of the river from the scouting point.

You do not need to be there at a specific time. The climb works identically during the day and at night, so there is no reason to burn a time segment waiting for a shift.

The climb: following the chimes to the summit

Cross the river to the northwest of the Briar Sloughs tower until the chimes become loud enough to hear over everything else. Hold the Focus button and keep it held whenever you lose the trail. Focus Mode outlines the chimes, the fabric-wrapped cairns, and the footprints, all of which are easy to walk past without it.
Find the first windchime dangling from a tree branch at the base of the slope. This is your anchor point. Everything after it is a climb rather than a walk.
Climb the rocky cliff directly behind that first chime. There is no alternate path around the side, so aim for the handholds on the face itself and follow the sound upward.

At the top of the first face, follow the mountain path past a wooden cart. The chimes and cairns continue along this stretch, and the ringing gets louder as you move in the correct direction.

Stop at the abandoned camp site partway up. Someone left food out to rot here. Sweep the area with Focus Mode and you will pick up footprints, which continue the trail where the chimes thin out.

Take the upper ledges, which are signposted by flagged windchime posts and white chalk markings on the stone. Dash and climbing abilities cover the steeper walls here far faster than hunting for a gentler route.

Keep tracking chimes, cairns, and footprints until the terrain opens into a large clearing at the top of the plateau. The objective updates to “Defeat the bear” as soon as you arrive, and a Ravenous Bear is resting there.

Tip: Make a manual save the moment you reach the top of the plateau. The fight starts almost immediately after the quest update.

If you lose the trail

The route has three separate marker types, and they hand off to each other rather than running side by side the whole way. When one disappears, look for the next.

MarkerHow to use it
WindchimesAudio guide. Move in the direction the ringing gets louder.
Cairns with fabricStone stacks marking the walkable path between climbs.
Chalk markingsPainted onto rock faces to show which wall is climbable.
FootprintsAppear after the abandoned camp; only visible in Focus Mode.

If nothing is highlighting, you have drifted off the pilgrimage route. Backtrack to the last chime or cairn you passed and re-approach from there rather than trying to force a climb up an unmarked face.

Killing the Ravenous Bear at the top

This is the same enemy type you may have already fought at Outlaw’s Gorge, and it fights the same way. It has two unblockable attacks. The first is a charge that knocks Coen to the ground. The second is a rear-up onto its back legs followed by a ground slam aimed directly forward.

Both are dodged sideways rather than backwards. Time the dodge well and you get a perfect dodge window, which opens the bear up to a counterattack. Trying to block either move does not work.

Finishing the quest: the uriashi body and the glyph

With the bear dead, head to the west side of the clearing and examine the uriashi body. Inspecting the wound on his forearm reveals a symbol carved into the skin.
Interact with the bloody knife lying near the stones. Combined with the wound, this is enough for Coen to work out the uriashi was attempting witchcraft of his own up here.
Return to the centre of the stone circle and inspect the uriashi glyph carved into the Sacred Stone. Coen copies it down. This step is what costs two time segments, so do it when you are ready to advance the clock.
Open your inventory and read the scroll. That is what actually grants the Ravenous Flock Manual and unlocks the next rank of the Ravenous Flock witchcraft ability. Picking up the manual and never reading it leaves the rank locked.

You will know it worked when the quest closes out and 250 XP lands. Bear Trouble is one of four Sacred Stones in the wider A Pilgrimage for Power questline, and all four manuals together take Ravenous Flock to its maximum rank, assuming you spend the skill points on it.
