Piercing Shriek sits in the Vampirism tree of The Blood of Dawnwalker, and you cannot buy it with a skill point alone. The game gates it behind vrakhiri blood, which means you need a phial in your inventory before the skill even appears as an option. The fastest reliable route runs through a courtyard in Svartrau City, where Xanthe’s Blood Guard recruiters are guarding a golden reliquary.
Quick answer: Kill Xanthe’s Blood Guard recruiters in the Svartrau City courtyard, inspect the reliquary and pick [collect vrakhiri blood], then drink the Phial of Brencis’s Blood to unlock Piercing Shriek.
What Piercing Shriek does and what it costs
Piercing Shriek is an active Vampirism ability marked NIGHT ONLY. It stuns every enemy in front of you, drops their defence and attack damage, and turns your blocks into a damage reflect for the duration. Because it is a vampiric power, using it costs health on top of an activation charge.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Skill tree | Vampirism |
| Cost to use | 1 Activation Charge + 20% Health |
| Cooldown | 30 seconds |
| Restriction | Night only |
| Max level | 4 |
At the first rank the stun lasts 2 seconds, targets take 15 percent more damage and deal 15 percent less, a normal block reflects 10 percent of incoming damage and a Perfect Block reflects 40 percent. Every rank after that pushes those numbers up, ending at a 5 second stun, a 30 percent damage swing in both directions and a Perfect Block that sends 100 percent of the hit back at the attacker.
| Level | Stun | Damage swing | Block / Perfect Block reflect |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2s | +15% / -15% | 10% / 40% |
| 2 | 3s | +20% / -20% | 15% / 60% |
| 3 | 4s | +25% / -25% | 20% / 80% |
| 4 | 5s | +30% / -30% | 25% / 100% |
Effect duration also scales with rank, running 25 seconds at level 1 and 60 seconds at level 4. Higher ranks are bought at road shrines with skill points, time segments and a minimum Corruption level, marked by the fang icon on the upgrade panel.

The Phial of Brencis’s Blood is a Legendary Consumable weighing 0.10 and worth roughly 157 denarius. Its description is blunt about the trade you are making: drinking it grants Piercing Shriek in the Vampirism tree and significantly increases Corruption.

[destroy the reliquary] still ends the quest, but the blood is gone and Piercing Shriek stays locked.Destroying the reliquary is permanent for that quest. If you want the ability, collect the blood.
Drinking the phial and confirming the unlock
Collecting the blood closes out Xanthe’s Recruiters: Taste of Power. The quest-ended banner hands over experience and one skill point, and the phial lands in your inventory as a consumable.

Open your inventory, switch to the Consumables tab and drink the phial. Two on-screen messages confirm it worked: a CORRUPTION RISES alert with your new Corruption number, followed by a “New Vampiric Powers Available” notice. Piercing Shriek is then visible in the Vampirism tree and can be learned at a shrine.

The ability must be slotted into your Ability Wheel before you can cast it. Unlocking it in the tree is not enough on its own.
Other ways to obtain vrakhiri blood for Piercing Shriek
The Svartrau courtyard is not the only source. A second Phial of Brencis’s Blood is tucked away near the Beast of Balaur, and a separate quest line offers a different phial that teaches the same skill.
Brencis’s old hideout near Parlita
Use fast travel to reach the Mount Balaur Shrine and begin The Beast of Balaur quest. At night, travel north to the cave lying northwest of Parlita. Save before you enter—the Beast is inside.
After the fight, look up and use Shadowstep to climb the wall, then jump over the ledge into Brencis’s old hideout. Walk forward and open the small chest there for the phial. The Gladius legendary sword is in a treasure chest nearby, so sweep the area before you leave for Parlita to deliver Iancu’s letter to Ciprian.
Isbrand’s blood during Our Rotten Roots
Defeating Isbrand and completing the quest Our Rotten Roots also puts vrakhiri blood in your hands, and drinking it teaches Piercing Shriek the same way. Phials of Brencis’s Blood can also turn up as enemy loot across Vale Sangora, so check drops from bandits and supernatural foes if you are still short one.
Corruption cost of ranking the ability up
Every drink of vrakhiri blood pushes Corruption higher, and that is by design. Piercing Shriek’s upper ranks each demand a Corruption threshold alongside skill points and an hour of in-game time, so you cannot max it on a clean playthrough. Corruption climbs through using vampiric abilities and feeding, with feeding on humans raising it far more than feeding on animals.
Upgrades are purchased at any built and unlocked road shrine. Sit at one, check the fang and hourglass icons on the Piercing Shriek node, and spend what the rank asks for. If the fang requirement is not met yet, the upgrade stays greyed out until your Corruption catches up.
Treat the 20 percent health cost as part of the ability’s budget rather than an afterthought. The window it opens is generous, especially once the reflect values climb, but the night-only restriction means it is dead weight during daylight hours and worth swapping out of the wheel when you are planning a daytime run.
