The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Get to Svartrau Cathedral in A Monk and a Saint

The exact route into the cathedral by day and by night, plus the grave that opens St. Mihai's crypt.

The exact route into the cathedral by day and by night, plus the grave that opens St. Mihai’s crypt.

The “Go to Svartrau Cathedral” objective in A Monk and a Saint sounds simple until you arrive and find every door bolted. How you get in depends entirely on the time of day, and the cathedral itself is only half the job — the objective is really about learning St. Mihai’s symbol so Coen can open the right grave in the courtyard.

Quick answer: Svartrau Cathedral sits in the eastern part of Svartrau City, just north of the Silberstein fast travel point. Walk in through the front doors during the day, or use Shadowstep to climb the tower and enter through the balcony at night.

Svartrau Cathedral location on the map

Open the map and look at the eastern side of Svartrau City. The cathedral complex is highlighted in yellow, and the whole grounds are marked as a search area rather than a single pin. Fast travel to Silberstein and run northeast through the streets, or head northeast from the town square. The tower is one of the tallest structures around, so it is easy to line up on foot.

The quest starts on its own once Coen learns there is a sword buried under the cathedral, which for most players happens straight after wrapping up Night Terrors. There is no quest giver to return to and no fail state, so you can arrive at whatever hour suits you.

Entering Svartrau Cathedral during the day

Climb the front stairs and push open the main wooden doors. They are unlocked in daylight, so no ability is needed here.

Let the interior cutscene play. Florin is leading a baptism at the front of the nave, and the scene ends with Coen free to move around the congregation.

Question the people inside. The two who matter are the Deacon at the podium and the Craftsman standing in the right-hand corner. Both point you toward the missing Caretaker.

Cross the courtyard to the almshouse behind the well and pay the resident 100 Denarii to point out the sealed wing upstairs. Use Focus Mode there to spot scratches on the floor, then interact to shove the bookcase aside. That move costs 1 time segment.
Go down the stairs, clear the enemy waiting below, and take the Caretaker’s Key. Compel the corpse nearby if you want the full story of what happened to him.
Unlock the Caretaker’s Shed with the key and collect the Glass Shards. Hand them to the Craftsman so he can restore the stained glass window, then speak to the Deacon to receive the Library Key.
Head upstairs to the library and use Focus Mode to pick out the correct bookcase. Reading The Annals of Svartrau Cathedral, together with the repaired window, tells Coen exactly which grave belongs to St. Mihai.

Entering Svartrau Cathedral at night

After dark every door is locked, so the roof is the only way in. There is no alternative side entrance to hunt for.

Move to the tower on the southwestern side of the building and use Shadowstep to teleport up the exterior walls and scaffolding. Keep going until you reach the opening near the top.
Clawride down the inside of the tower to land on the balcony and rafters above the nave. Stay up on the platforms rather than dropping to the floor.
Work along the left-hand scaffolding to reach the frescoes. Three can be inspected, but the one you need is the furthest to the left, on the last scaffold. Coen reads St. Mihai’s symbol off the armor painted in that fresco.
Drop back out into the courtyard on the north side. Guards patrol here at night, so expect a fight before you can search the graves.

Note: an alternate night route runs through the well in the courtyard. Investigating the corpse down there costs 1 time segment and points to Mihai’s memorial stone, and you exit by clearing the kobolds and pushing the highlighted boulder out of the way.

Every way to learn St. Mihai’s symbol

The grave will not open until Coen knows the symbol, and there is more than one way to get it. Pick whichever costs you the least time.

Finding St. Mihai’s grave in the courtyard

The courtyard on the north side of the cathedral holds five graves, all of which light up in Focus Mode. Stand facing the cathedral and count from the right — the correct one is the second from the right. Interact with it to clear the leaves and expose the carved symbol, and Coen then opens the slab on his own to reveal the shaft down into the crypt.

If nothing happens when you interact, Coen has not learned the symbol yet. The search area is deliberately vague and there is no exact quest marker, which is why the graves read as inert on a first pass.

Crypt route and the Mihai boss fight

Drop down and follow the passage to the room in the middle, taking the first door on the left. Loot the coffins along the way for extra items. At the dead end, use Focus Mode to find the yellow-highlighted broken section of wall where the noise is coming from, and interact to dig through. That costs 1 time segment and triggers a cutscene.

Breaking the wall frees Mihai, Patron of the Cathedral, and starts the boss fight immediately, so go in prepared. He fights with a sword, has a deep health pool, throws out fast unblockable lunges, fills the room with fog that kills your visibility, and teleports behind you. Level 25 or higher is a comfortable benchmark.

Two timed dialogue choices follow the fight. Neither changes the outcome. Before you leave the boss room, grab the Broken Chains and the Worn Sheath, both highlighted in Focus Mode, which fill in what actually happened to him.

Rewards and how to confirm the quest completed

Beating Mihai closes A Monk and a Saint. You will see the quest marked complete in the log, the Broken Sword of St. Mihai lands in your inventory, and Forge It Anew appears as the follow-up in the same questline.

Mihai tells you the other half of his blade is with the kobolds and sends you to the uriashi blacksmith to have it reforged. Completing that chain turns the broken weapon into the Imbued Sword of St. Mihai and unlocks the Arbiter’s Blade trophy, so hold onto the sword rather than selling or scrapping it.
