The sturdy stone door blocking the ancient ruins in The Highland Grove has no lever, no lockpick option, and no way to be broken down. It is a straight key check, and the key is sitting on a corpse at the other end of the quest area.
Quick answer: Loot the skeleton pinned under the wrecked cart at the landslide site to get the Scholar’s Key, then travel to the ruins marked on your map and use the key on the stone door.
Scholar’s Key location in The Highland Grove
The Highland Grove runs on three objectives, and they have to happen in order. You inspect the landslide site, work out who was trying to reach the ruins before you, and only then does the door become openable.

Three items come out of the satchel, and each one does a different job.
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Scholar’s Key | Unlocks the sturdy stone door at the ruins |
| Scholar’s Map | Places the ruins location on your map |
| Tattered Journal | Identifies the scholar who died here, dated March 15th, AD 1346 |
Reading the journal resolves the “Find out who tried to get to the ruins before” objective, and the quest log switches over to “Open the sturdy door.”

The Highland Grove chest rewards
The chamber holds one chest with three pieces of gear inside it.
| Reward | Type |
|---|---|
| Ancient Hero’s Talisman | Master amulet |
| Ring of Quick Strikes | Legendary ring |
| Blasphemous Echo Manual | Master character development |
How to confirm the quest is complete
The “QUEST ENDED” banner appears the moment the chest is looted, not when the door opens. Straight after that, the follow-up quest Echoes of Silenced Bells becomes active, with its first objective asking you to meet Anca at the old inn. If you opened the door but never saw the completion banner, you left without touching the chest.
Why the sturdy door won’t open
There is really only one failure case here, and it comes from arriving at the ruins too early.
- You have not looted the skeleton yet. The Scholar’s Key exists nowhere else in the quest, and the door stays sealed without it.
- You inspected the landslide but skipped the satchel. Approaching the cart is not the same as searching the remains, so go back and take all three items.
- You found the ruins on your own before picking up the Scholar’s Map. Reaching the entrance early changes nothing, the key still has to come first.
The whole sequence takes only a couple of minutes once you are at the landslide, and none of it is time-restricted, so you can leave the ruins and come back later with the key still in your inventory.
